Kid Peligro Jiu Jitsu News . . .
Big Surprises at the Niteroi Cup:
The biggest news of the tournament was the presence of Rorion Gracie's son Riron. Riron, who has been in Brazil for a few weeks training with his grandfather, Professor Helio, is currently a purple belt. Professor decided to take his grandson to the tournament in order to test him. Because they wanted him to have the longest possible time for his matches (Black Belt fights are 10 min. while Purple Belt Matches are 7 min.), Professor had Riron compete in the Black Belt heavyweight division. The 92 Kg Riron submitted his first opponent with a choke from the mounted position and then had to face a rested Aureliao (125Kg). Aureliao, the runner up in the 2000 Worlds Over Division and a great judoka, took Riron down twice and got to across the side position after passing Riron's guard. Riron was able to put Aureliao back in the half guard, from there Riron did a beautiful reversal, got a technical mount (wasn't awarded the points in error). He then took the back (without hooks) and spent the last 4 minutes of the match attacking Aureliao's neck. Riron lost by points but everyone present were duly impressed with the kids performance.
After the match Riron gave back his Black Belt to his grandfather and took back his purple belt. Professor Helio stated that he was pleased with the kid's performance especially because they don't train for regular sport competition and do not care for points, therefore aren't up on the latest rules. Congratulations to Riron for his great showing and to all the other competitors.
