  • Gene Simco's BJJ Master Text, any good?

Okay, what's the deal with the overpriced and hyped book BJJ - The Master Text, by Gene Simco? (Especially the thick 2nd Edition, with the black cover)

I have heard lots of good reviews, but also lots of bad.

The good reviews usually say that the content is excellent.

The bad reviews usually concentrate either on Simco's personal traits, business habits, or the price of the book.

Let's assume I already know what the book costs, and secondly I am not interested in Gene's personality in any shape or form, so the only guestion I'm interested in is: how do you rate the contents of the book? Is it a good BJJ book or not?

I've not seen the book but Simco's story is well chronicled about how he touted himself as a black belt and was not. For that reason alone, I would never buy a book from someone like him.

There are many Jiu Jitsu books out there that are great-Renzo's, Carlson's and many others. I think it depends on what level of a Jiu Jitsu/MMA/grappler you are as to what book is good for you and what you want to learn.

I think books are ok but DVD's are much better for learning

When I was looking for a good book to buy I also looked into this one. The title is alluring, but the mixed reviews ultimately steered me away from making a purchase. I did however buy "The Bible of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu" by Francisco Mansur, and it is awesome. It is basically the first in a series that Master Mansur is coming out with, but outlines, in detail, many moves you need to know. The price isnt too bad, only $30 and it goes from day one. I use this as a supplement to my training, reviewing what I had just learned to get it into my head. I would not use this as a stand alone in place of training but as something to look at from a third person perspective if you have any doubts about the move. Grand Master Mansur is a ninth degree red belt in BJJ, one of only a few under Helio Gracie himself. Check this one out. There are also DVDs from Grand Master Mansur through Budo International, or blackbelt. Immortal.com carries these books or try his website at kiotobjjny.com. Good training.
