I think its interestin to see how catch wrestlers function positionally, without the traditional Judo/Jujutsu positions. However, this guy is pushing it in a way I don't like, I think hes a dick when he says "You'll be the next bonafide butt-kick people whisper about in the streets." Thats lame, thats not an art, thats for fuckers who want to hurt people and be "big n' bad."

As I prepared to leave, I had to walk across the mat where a class was in session. When I was almost through the room, one of the instructors, a purple belt, gave me a look. I thought nothing of it and wasn't looking for trouble. He came closer. I figured he was just coming over to introduce himself. Somehow he got a hold of my sweatshirt and instinctively grabbed his gi and we started grappling.

Matt Fury is always good for a few thousand laughs. The guy went off the deep end a few years ago.

That Matt Furey seems like a total dickhead. Aside from that, Catch wrestling is essentially Submission wrestling. There's a few Catch wrestlers who claim to be way more effective than BJJ and other grappling arts, but those people are the one's trying to sell the "Catch wrestling" product.

But from what i understand, Catch wrestling is more of a stradegy and combo of all techniques of grappling than a "Style". A catch wrestler's stradegy is to get the throw or takedown, which they train really hard to do. Get a top position and pass guard. The common goal. But a CW will sacrifice his position to go for submissions like Heel hooks, Kneebars, etc. They will usually attempt to submit fighters from half guard and side control.

Examples of real Catch wrestlers are Matt Hughes, Josh Barnett, and other ranked Professional fighters that i cant think of their names right now. There's also a lot of Japanese Shooto(shoot fighting) guys who use Catch for their grappling game.

I wouldnt call Matt Hughes a Catch Wrestler... Its... well just look at what you described, thats pretty accurate as far as I know, and does that sound like Hughes. Does he look for submissions even if it gives up position... he's not a Catch Wrestler, Josh Barnett is, he's probably the most famous one, but Hughes isnt really Catch, he's Wrestling/MMA.

I'm pretty sure catch has a different positional system altogether, where guys would rather be turtled than have someone in thier gaurd. Does anyone actually know the positional system of catch? I know its not as paramount as positioning in BJJ, but there is still some structure right?

Catch wrestling in American MMA, not really... and especially not Hughes.

Catch wrestliing is the style they use in pro wreslting, not really based in science, more or less a brute strength type thing.

I think this guy Furey is kinda outa his mind. I've read some other stuff by him and his claims seem a little crazy.

If you guys want to know about Matt Furey just go to his website and check out all the stuff on there and you will have your answers (thats all I am going to say). Catch Wrestling is a very effective grappling art as some of you have said. It does combine the different grappling arts as well as striking. It originated in the Lancashire area of England and was brought to the U.S. in the early to mid 1800's (some books say earlier). Once the American fighters learned it they made it their own and made it better. You have to remember in those day America was a young nation going thru all the growing pains that a nation goes through. From 1861 to 1865 you had the American Civil War going on and in those days wrestling was the fighting art of the Army. President Lincoln was a champion wrestler in college and once he took office he had the Army start training and learning wrestling. Anyway I did not mean to get off the subject that bad...as for Catch Wrestling they still train the same positions that you do in BJJ the main difference is that they do not place the same importance on those positions as most bjj players do. Most Catch Wrestlers pride themselves on being able to submit their opponent from any position. By this I mean that they do not have to be in the perfect "cross body" or have the "perfect" guard or even pass the guard to make you submit. They train so they will be able to submit you from either top or bottom position in cross body or guard, so they do not always try to pass the guard. There are alot of submissions that can be done while in the person's guard or half guard. The same is true when they are in the side body position. Now this does not mean that a Catch Wrestler will beat a bjj fighter everytime or any other fighter as far as that goes. I believe it is the fighter that makes the art and not the other way around. I train Catch Wrestling and I really really like it alot. I also train in bjj and am currently a blue belt in it and I like bjj just as much. The main problem (if you want to call it that) is that some bjj guys do not like to have an open mind to anything that is not bjj. I have been lucky in having a bjj instructor who is open minded and likes to learn catch and we will exchange ideas and techniques with each other and we both always learn something new.

Also, Catch does have a lot of the same chokes that bjj has in it. The most famous is the RNC. Strangler Louis was famous for choking people out back in his day. The difference is how you get into the choke and what kind of cheap shots you would give your opponent once you had him there.

Peace my brothers for it is all good. Just keep grappling and sharing what you know.

Farmer Burns was a pioneer in wrestling in America and is the main reason that wrestling is so big in the mid-western states like Iowa and Nebraska. He actually opened a physical fitness training facility and did a mail order course for catch wrestling and was able to convince those in charge of higher education that wrestling was a great way to stay in shape and develop conditioning and convinced them to allow him to start teaching wrestling to the high school and college kids. He is also the man who trained Frank Gotch.

Catch wrestling originated in Lancashire in North West England and got popular when people took it to the US in the 19th Century. Its had a bit of a resurgence in the North West recently, with a couple of clubs reviving on the back of the growth of sub grappling and BJJ. Someone's made a film:

Which features Dan Severn as a leading exponent.

You're spot on about Lancashire. I've got a few mates from up north who often refer to it as 'catch as catch can'. It's got some good techniques.

Personally, I'd love to have the time to combine the best moves from bjj/sombo/catch/shoot to get a great grappling game. But there's sooo much to learn so I'm focusing on bjj for now.
