P.S. You are right, most begginers like it, but most begginers just try to force the arm down and pull it off, I properly set it up. Also, I said it's my FAVORITE, doesn't necessarily mean it's my best sub from sidecontrol or most commonly used.

If we were going with most commonly used... well, with a gi... I strongly prefer knee on belly, and from there I like to armbar, but without gi I would say I usually go for a kimura and just straighten it out.
I just avoid getting caught in it, but ive been caught in kimuras many times.
As far as with the GI, then Id say lapel chokes are the most common, and esp. the EZEKIEL, that works the best for me time and time and time again, even in tournies

I like lapel chokes, but I try to keep everything I do in gi practical for no gi(not becoming to relient on lapel chokes so I'm more versatile when the gi comes off).

I've escaped the keylock many times by just stuffing my head on top of his first arm. But yes, it works better on beginners than the higher belts, as does anything else.

The best is when someone (usually a newer white belt) will try to keylock me INSIDE MY GUARD. That's just basically an invitation for me to take his back.

When I first started doing tourneys I'd get someone in my guard then flap my arm out to the side. 50% of the time they'd fall for it .

I've recently rediscovered the americana after Erik Paulson showed me the 'tricep shave'. Got a tap from it today before I'd even gripped the wrist for the keylock/americana. It makes a change to some of the flowery stuff I've been learning recently. Basics, basics, basics

Jean Jacque Machado Torture Rack is probably the deadliest move out there, even more deadly than bullets.

You gotta love the rear naked because that means so much more than a tap, thats rear mount hooks in and to the neck. Thats domination. Other than that Id have to say a keylock from north-south is nice, kimura in guard and a good old fashioned cross choke from guard or mount. **** an armbar.

What's the difference between keylock, americana, and kimura? I thought they were used interchangeably?

keylock and americana are but i think kimura depends on position, but they are basically the same thing

Actually, from what i understand, a Keylock is not really a specific sub, but more of a type of lock. Sort of like the figure four. Keylocks can be done from a russian tie and can be used in other holds that arent subs. Kimuras and Americanas are both keylocks, just different types. A Kimura tears your shoulder muscle and can potentially snap your arm out of its socket. This move can be done from more positions than the Americana just because of the nature of the hold. An Americana will snap your tendons near the elbow. Think of the Americana as a heel hook on your arm. Obviously a Kimura will have the victims hand "aimed" towards their feet and an Americana towards their head.
