  • Training in Japan??

Ok im not sure if this would be the right place to ask but, does anyone know where some gyms are in yokohama that i can learn a MMA??

I've never trained (MMA) before but always been a athelete and fan of MMA and would train hard providing i have the knowledgeable trainers to teach me. I live near Yokohama but i dont speak Japanese so it's proving to be a little difficult to find a place that is serious and would train me. I would like to find like a Shoot fighting school, vale tudo or sometihng like that but would even be happy to find and kind of MMA school right now to start. Thanx

Where abouts near Yokohama? I lived in Chigasaki (near Fujisawa) for about six months.

For BJJ - Takamasa Watanabe (black belt under Rickson, founder of BJJ Federation of Japan) teaches in both Tokyo and Yokohama. The address of the Yokohama branch is

          Yokohama-shi
          Minami-ku
          Yoshino-cho 3-10-202
          Tel: 03-3325-6699
          email: contact@axisjj.com

Taka-sensei speaks excellent English (as well as Japanese and Portuguese). He was my BJJ instructor when I was living in Tokyo - he's a fantastic instructor.

The focus of his classes is gi-based BJJ though. If no-gi/MMA is what you're looking for, there's shoot and Pancrase gyms as JKD187 said.

Awesome gym looks like some good serious fighting. The only thing looks a little pricey but i suppose you get what you pay for. I think i'll be checking it out soon.
JkD187, how long have you been training or competing? I'm new to it like i said but would love to have a serious partner although i'm thinking if you're real experienced i'd probably just be a pain in the a** until i get caught up. The desire is there tho. Keep in touch man, do you know where you're moving to (tokyo, yokohama)??
I appreciate everyones advice. The japanese thing....well i dont think im going to stay here forever so honestly i try to learn as much as i can but i know i'll never be fluent before i leave and i were to have to time to pick up a second language it wouldnt be japanese (no offense AT ALL) intended but you cant even go into a Walmart in Cali unless you speak spanish. So, for me to learn Japanese when i dont evne know Spanish i think would be a little silly. I do know scoshi Japanese though just from being here
If people have more gym also i'd like to know about those and yes im leaning more towards no gi stlye fighting although beggers cant be chosers.

Not fer nothin' but isn't that attitude exactly why you need to speak Spanish in California, USA?

Yes you're right and i think i may have worded that a little funny. I MEANT to say im not sure how long i was going to stay in Japan (i know not TOO long) but if i had the time i would love to learn say SPANISH since that would be actually useful to me for the rest of my life most likely. I'm actually planning on learning (continuing) spanish ASAP.
If my brain was better i would say i could multi-task and learn both but unfortunately i know my limits and my databank isn't a central hub more like limited storage (haha).
I wish i could know about 10 languages truthfully

Japanese is a very hard language to learn. There's the ideographic character-kanji and then there's hiragana. Kanji is all memorization.

Spanish is a much simpler and easier language to learn.

I know both but my Spanish is much better since I do live in LA, use it all the time, especially since we go to Mexico so often since it's so close.

I think you'll find most gyms in Japan to be expensive compared to US prices.

My friend's place is I think in Tokyo, not too close to where you're at but here's his website. He's a brown belt under Caique

Awesome idea, man! Keep a training journal and post it here, kind of like what some people have done on the Muay Thai forum.
