  • BJJ gi sizing

Hey, I've been doing bjj for a little while now and the problem with my gi now I think is the size. I'm really short; 5'3 110-120; and I had a size 4 (Not A4) Just 4. And there was like 3 inches slack in the waist, the pants were pretty baggy, and the jacket seemed too long.
I was looking at the Koral kimonos and wasn't sure to get a A1 or A0? Their sizing charts are two different things from the koralusa website and the jiujitsuprogear website which koral sells through. It's hard to find anyone around my size but even if you are and it was a different company that'd be great to know how it fit and what brand it was. Thanks in advance.

give the guys a call at Jiu Jitsu Pro Gear and tell them your height and weight.

They will help you get the right Gi....

Koral Gi's are pre-shrunk so you don't have to compensate for the fabric to shrink-this is a great thing about Korals as opposed to other Gi's.

Many of the Gi companies have great customer support.
HCK and Machado Gi's are also very good for helping you with the right fit for your Gi.

I'm assuming you don't live in or near LA, otherwise you'd be able to drop into to a place like the Pro Gear shop in Manhattan Beach...which is too bad.

I dont know where you heard Korals dont shrink.. but oh shit do they shrink.

All of your gi's are gonna shrink, here is what you do, when you get it, try it on. Say the pants are too long, the jacket needs its sleeves to be shortened a bit, whatever fine.

Wash it, air dry it... when it is almost dry, throw it in the dryer for five minutes, put it on, sleeves still too long? put it back in for another 3-5 minutes... did the pants come out just right, perfect, dont put em back in.

I'd personally leave it like... an inch or 2 bigger than you'd want it, and obviously its not an exact science but both gi's I've done this with, one was keiko, one was koral, have worked out nicely. Koral is still on the big side in the jacket, I thought it would shrink more through all the air drying it gets, it hasnt, but I'm happy with the way it is.

I heard koral's don't shrink where it says "Koral gis are pre-shrunk" on the koralusa.com website

When you click on the description of one of the gi's.
And when I called up jiujitsu pro gear one of the representatives told me that they should hardly shrink if it's pre-shrunk.

I have to say my two HCK gis have hardly shrunk at all. I know I am not supposed to, but I dry them after every wash. I live in Hawaii and it quite humid so we are more susceptible to mildew. But I have to say I mostly like a fresh gi from the dryer, not hung dry and all super scratchy.

The gameness gi however, shrinks non-stop. It is similar to HCK gi regarding lapel thickness, but has lighter pants. But as you now know, I like to dry my gi's. The gameness one shrank after every dry. So maybe get a gameness gi and dry it to your fit? Just some thoughts. Also do give HCK a call, he is very knowledgeable and friendly. Good luck in finding the right gi.

only dry korals or vulcans on medium heat - hi heat will cause the rubber lapel to warp. Still my fave gi's though, only a tiny bit of shrinkage

Eh, I'm not saying all your gi's are gonna shrink, and many pre-shrunk things do shrink....

I'm just saying whats happened with mine, I'd rather he be safe than sorry and go by trial and error, instead of trusting his new 160 dollar gi (thats how much my koral cost) to a label.
