  • Mentality devide: Wrestling/BJJ

    Wrestlers tend to have a very agressive approach, while a BJJ man usually focuses more on staying cool and collected and focusing on the intriquacy of technique..... why could this be?

    i haven't practiced either but it's an interesting topic so i'm going to shoot my mouth off anyway

    i think part of it may have to do with there being more to worry about in bjj. by that i mean in collegiate wrestling it's all about establishing position and all the points are related to transitions between position. Throw in chokes and locks and you have to be on guard for many more possibilities of where your demise could come from. for that reason the element of caution and awareness is important in bjj even while attacking because it's always a possibility that you'll get caught in an arm bar when you're reaching for something else. Compare that to wrestling where you can win just by touching the guys shoulders to the mat. in that situation you can't afford to watch for your opening and attack smoothly. Basically i think it boils down to the simple fact that the rules of wrestling reward an aggressive attitude, while bjj rewards a calmer attitude.

      How long is a typical match at a BJJ tourney?

        Good topic.

        I guess its the philosophy of east vs. west.

        Wrestling is by far and large a western sport and with it comes external, activity; the goal is to control your opponent and pin him. To take control of your opponent you really have to take direct action and go to work. You still need technique, but not as many fine motor skills as jujitsu.

        Jujitsu originated in Japan and is eastern in nature so it is more about the passive overcoming the active. The goal in jujitsu is to subdue your opponent, so you want to make sure that your fine motor skills are tight. When you get into position, that technique has to be perfect if its going to overcome a potentially larger and stronger opponent.

        That's my $0.01 on the topic.

          It's just the nature of the game. In wrestling, you really don't have an option of slowing down. If you decide to sit there and let your opponent make the move while you're riding, your opponent will escape because he is constantly moving. If you're on bottom, your opponent will break you down because you leave yourself vulnerable to his breakdowns.
          In BJJ you can slow down and conserve your energy while trying to predict what move your opponent is about to do next.
          What it truly boils down to, I think, is the pinning system. The rules of wrestling state that if your back is pinned for the mat for 2 seconds, you have lost. While in BJJ, getting pinned is all part of the game. Wrestlers therefore have to expend much of their energy to escape those pinning situations so as to keep the game going while in BJJ being pinned isn't necessarily the end of the world.

            Wrestling ----> Active/Assertive -----> Control
            Ju-jitsu -----> Passive/Technical -----> Submission

              Either that or the ref. will penalize you for stalling.

                I don't know wrestling, but wearing a gi slows down BJJ very much. Since I learned initially with gi, I still tend to move more slowly than some people I've worked with who learned grappling as relates to MMA (no gi).

                  cuz wresters dont have the sub capabilites of BJJ guys, so they dont worry about making mistakes, which is why 99 out of 100 times the wrestler gets submitted by the more advanced BJJ practitioner. ANd why do wrestlers wear those funny hee-haw strong man in the circus tights with those water-polo ear covers? they certainly look like something out of a san francisco street parade during gay pride week

                    Since when did not having subs allow wrestlers to not worry about making mistakes? Wrestling is probably the one sport where you can't afford to make a mistake. Your ignorance of this kind of stuff is mind numbing, go to the Chinese Martial Arts forums and troll there instead.

                      they do have to worry about making mistakes but since they havent a clue to what a BJJ guy is going to do, they make all sorts of them, dumb as they are

                        Put it that way a Bjj guy trying to wrestle a wrestler will make just the same amount of mistakes. Now you're just throwing silly little insults at some of the best athletes in the world. -sigh- silly Gracie nuthuggers.

                              BJJ looks better than that in what sense? Then again there's no point in arguing with you since you're obviously a troll. These boards have gone to the shits lately.
