  • Technique Q: (opponents grabbing hands)

On two occasions, I've come across new guys who were strong and had a good feel on the ground. Not knowing what to do, they couldn't go on the offense but were determined to shut me down by being ultra-defensive. In my guard, they wound up grabbing my wrists and making sure my hands didn't cross the centerline of my body (these were pretty strong guys).

I had a lot of trouble setting up an offense, partly because they were not mounting enough of an offense to open themselves to mistakes I could exploit. I eventually always got the best of them, but this got me to thinking. I was wondering if there are working attacks that can be mounted against strong people who sit in your guard with a stable base and basically pin the back of your wrists to your own armpits.

    Any suggestions?

BJJ is all about using leverage and skill to overcome a size/strength disadvantage.

There are simple techniques for releasing your wrists when they are being held like that. These techniques are actually similar to some of the standing Jap. JJ wrist releases, only done on the ground. You just need to have someone show them to you.

If a guy is stalling in your guard and being defensive, that's your clue to become offensive by getting mobile.

Get mobile. Move your hips around and start attacking with various sweeps in all 8 directions until one of them hits.

They stall = you get moving.

There's a white belt opinion for you.

use what is not being held put your knee in his coccxyx and sit up it will loosen his guard always remember that if you want to free yourself distance is the best option...pull away..use your entire back against his arms use levers..and finally let time be your ally...so you sit there for a minute waiting ...sometimes thats all you can do royce vs severn will teach you that if royce cant do in 1 minute then dont expect to do it either..breathe...
