WildWest...Have you ever been taught Kata Bunkai or application to the Katas/patterns?

Hate Mcdojo shit too, USA is much bigger than UK so must get more of it but we get a fair bit here too.
Not mentioning any names or areas but a while ago there was a karate man, Shotokan i think he done. He was a 3rd Dan when he broke away from the big organisation and started his own, within 2 years he was advertising his self as a 6th Dan
No I haven't done Kata Bunkai, but we did dabble a little bit in it when I did TKD as a teenager. I would say that you need to study the applications thoroughly and then learn to apply them in a practical and realistic manner. But then they wouldn't be patterns anymore!

I'm not in the USA, although I've heard there are some shocking McDojo clubs there. I live in NZ, much much smaller but still they are around the place, however nowhere near as widespread.

This is the internet. You cant prove anything, its pointless to talk big, and its even more pointless to get on someone who is talking big. It means nothing, get over it.

Now, two things. First, you are obviously describing olympic style, wich is a SPORT, not a martial art. There is a reason all tkd fighters in mma are from itf schools.

Second, its absurd to make a blanket statement about a large group of martial artists because you beat up a tkd guy. I bet I could find a bjj guy that my 13 year old brother could beat up, doesnt mean anything.

Obviously you train for what you do. I have trouble sparring against this guy who is 6' and all legs, simply because he will hold his leg out in the air and round kick me when I try to move in (im 5'7). I always think how easy it would be to either kick out his base, attack his leg, or just grab his leg and take him down.

However we dont do takedowns in our style, so he has addopted that style of fighting because there is no problem with it, given traditional tkd rules.

It all comes down to what you want to get out of it.

Yeah, it's the person that makes the style, not vice versa.

TKD isn't ALL crap. The soccer kick is pretty nice and I think it'd be good for cardio or flexibility, among other things. TKD, like every other style nowadays, needs to be supplemented with grappling as well. TKD + grappling can be quite formidable.

Is this a TKD hating thread or what. I mean most of the guys I train with do TKD I don't. But if you take a step back you are gonna get kicked in the head. I do agree that from what I've seen it is a money making racket, but some of the stuff they teach is useful. And everyone keeps saying that their high kicks are useless. Last time I checked your head is up there where they kick. Just my observation. Blast away.

I agree the the hight kicks of tkd are worthless for sd even though it could be done just look at the numerous 1 kick knockouts in mma but in a street fightI'd keep kick low and work punches elbows knees and gapelling i've been inot 300+ streeet altercation as a bouncer so zi'm not insecure baout my street dedfense ability. In the ring they can just bvring cauce i got too much game, to much slickness too much power nad too much tecqnie I don't give peole a beat down I give them a smash down and there strick I do'nt even feel cause I'm so jacked up.

LOL I can tell this guy's got no sense of humor how are you gonna be a fighter without a sense of humor? As far as sparring I missed an oppurtunity back in the day to be Rick Roufuse's sparring partner for a boxing fight he was training for, my boxing friend who seell fight vids for a living knew him and It was hundered of miles to milwakeee to bad it would be an honor to get beat up by Mr. Roufus.
