  • Pride NYE

I have to plead ignorance to the fact that I'm not all that familiar with Pride. The irony being that I live in Japan and am going on New Years to Shockwave in Tokyo. Question: as a novice what match ups should I be pumped about? How does the quality of the fighters measure up to UFC? I saw on their web page that some of the dudes had just a hand full of MMA fights on their record and in the main event the challenger is like 5-2. Once again I'm not trying to bad mouth Pride my boxing coach actually says he prefers it. I just want some more input. So throw me your two cents.
    Thanks

With the exception of Fedor and Mirko not being on the NYE card, this is still going to be a kick ass event... better than any UFC thats for damn sure.

Takanori Gomi vs. Mitsuhiro Ishida. This is a dream fight. Gomi lost to Aurelio the first time. After that, Ishida dominated Aurelio. Then Gomi and Aurelio had a rematch and Gomi won by split decision in a boring Stall n Sprawl strategy.

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura, both really good fighters. Nakamura is bigger and a really good grappler both standing and ground. Shogun is PRIDE's overated superstar and i hope he loses.

Josh Barnett vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, the rematch. These two top 3 HW's fought eachother in the semi finals of the 2006 OWGP tournament to face Cro Cop in the finals. Barnett won by split decision.

Joachim Hansen vs. Shinya Aoki, this is gonna be good, real good. Aoki is a Judo and BJJ blackbelt but i dont think he can strike. Hell, he can even take very good fighters down anymore. Hansen by KO. or Aoki by sub.

Tatsuya Kawajiri vs. Gilbert Melendez, a Shooto veteran vs an american fighter.

    There's also
    Wanderlei Silva vs. TBA
    Ricardo Arona vs. TBA
    Dan Henderson vs. TBA
    Hidehiko Yoshida vs. TBA
    Kazuyuki Fujita vs. TBA

OK guys this is getting even better. As a Navy journalist I'm shamelessly trying to parlay my pseudo propaganda skills into better seats and a chance to interview the fighters. I thought about starting a new thread on this site and sherdog for interview question inputs but since you guys hooked me up with responses I figured I'd give you first shot. Here is the reply I got from the PRIDE organization. The broken engrish was copied and pasted directly from my email.

I was confirmation about PRIDE office. You have to make plans of the interview.(for example, make a navy newspaper etc.) English ok. Fax:03-54**-1**2 Dream stage entertainment(PRIDE Office) They want to get Fax. Send fax is early better. Please tell Peter and guys. Satsuki

A girl from work is going to Pride NYE....I'm jealous as hell!! And they are 6 rows from the the ring. However she is gutted that Fedor and Mark Hunt aren't fighting......does anyone know if they've found Hunt a new opponent??

Pride has great fighters. It's hard to compare on a one to one basis with the UFC, quite frankly the rules are different, and for the second lightest weight class(UFC welterweight, Pride middleweight) there simply is too much of a weight discrepancy.

However, you're going to see some absolutely great fighters. Hendo(Dan Henderson) was an absolutely world class US wrestler. Yoshida was an Olympic medalist in judo. Wanderlei Silva has beaten Rampage Jackson...you may have heard of Rampage as the guy who beat Liddell in '03.

The six lightweights featured are all world class...they'd easily do very well in UFC, even with the rule changes. Gomi, Hansen, Kawajiri, Ishida...man they're ALL contenders...well Gomi's the current champ.

Josh Barnett beat Couture back in the day to become UFC HW champ.

If you get to interview the fighters, the American fighters would probably be the best interviews. Hendo and Barnett are both great at talking to the press. Hansen's European but his English is pretty good IIRC. You're a lucky bastard.

Did you guys see the Fedor fight? He fought so poorly for some reason. Here it is if you wanna check it out.

Here's Shinya Aoki's fight, another quick submission.

I love the gogoplata, I think it's going to become an increasingly popular move.
