That's not friendly, its dumb. If the guy has already thrown a punch at you the time for making friends has passed.

depends how drunk he is, the norm for a fight in my area is for somebody who's hammered to come charging of which the majority of the time the punches dont even land so i'd just push him over.

Well, I haven't taken any SD-classes, so yes that might be dumb.
The way I envision it, this dude get's mad at me because I bumbed into him and made him spill his drink on him or something... while I try to apologize he starts shoving me and screaming stuff... then he launches in and throws his haymaker.
Now, I honestly think what I wrote is what I would do. I would try to make him miss and just control distance and angles while trying to talk to him. Finally he would probably get me into a corner, and that's when I would fire back as a last resort. Perhaps I would just jab at him when I have pivoted away as the only counter attack.
Perhaps he would see that "wow this guy is really hard to hit, and he lands his punches at me at will it seems.. AND he says he doesn't want to fight", and he would see my hands up, palms facing toward him in a defensive manner all the time.
I know, tactically that is not the best thing, but hey that's still what I think my brain would react with, I'm just being honest.

Once when I was out a friend got into a fight, and I was attacked too. I was drunk. My attacker started throwing punches toward my head from the side or something, I couldn't see him. I covered up and took the shots on my shoulder or top of the head, and moved away at the same time. I also told him while he was trying to hit me that "hey dude, I'm not in the fight!".
Shortly after my friend was out cold on the street, and the guys left.
So, with that incident in mind (combined with some other stuff), that's why I think I would be so passive, it's in my nature.. good or bad.
Perhaps most guys would be very angry at the guy attacking him... strangly enough I had no such feelings. I understood why he was attacking me. My friend had attacked HIS friend, and he thought I was going to hurt his friend too because I was standing so close. Damn I'm weird.

In this case yes, it was my intention all along actually. In other situations I have stood up for people I don't know even...
But in this case, my friend was actually picking the fight for no reason at all, and he also started the fight. So I thought to myself, "ok man, if you're gonna be stupid while drunk, here's a chance to learn your lesson. I will not interfere if you start to fight". And he started the fight, and got knocked out as a result. He woke up a few minutes later and I went with him to the hospital and told him what had happened. He was drunk but ok, just a few bruises and some swelling, no biggie.
Perhaps he learned a lesson.. don't pick fights just to act tough in front of your friends.

So I don't think this has anything to do with my balls size hehe... I didn't feel fear really... I did feel the adrenaline dump though.
Too bad I had so much to drink, because everything was more of a haze because of it.

Oh and actually, it was after that I saw they were several of them. When he started the fight there was only one. And yeah, I stood there watching them fight, one on one. Then I was attacked.

I would protect my friends, hell they might be stupid assholes sometimes, but what is the point of being a friend if you aren't there when they need you most...

but yeah, difference of opinion I guess

Well, he's not a close friend, he trained at my gym, and we we're out together. I don't think I would have close friends that go out drinking and looking for a fight (saw him looking for a fight earlier that evening as well).
If he didn't start the fight himself I would definitely help him. But he was being an ass and attacking that other guy (who was a thaiboxer btw...). The truth is he had it coming, and needed the lesson. That's my opinion.

Yup, the sign of true friendship is when you get involved in a stupid fight that your stupid friend started 'cause he was drunk. Yell at him about it the next day, but when your friend needs a hand it doesn't matter if he was 'right' or not.

I understand Gabbah. When I was playing rugby in the UK, and one of my teammates and I were walking along Regent Street in London one night, when he decided to be a smart mouth to a random guy walking on the street. The guy KO'ed him with a single punch. I checked to make sure my teammate hadn't hit his head on the concrete and left it alone. The guy walked off and the cops turned up about 5 mins later.

My teammate was a smart arse and paid the price as far as I'm concerned. He the only real thing he hurt was his pride and he bloody well deserved it. A week or 2 later he admitted that to me as well.

                        You live and you learn.

I would throw his punch to my side with a block and round house him hard in the knee or thigh.
followed by a a lunge punch to the face, and a left hook to his chin

what combos or moves would you do?
                          what techniques?
This simply would not happen as my sixth sense would tell me that someone was running at me with his fist held out and i would therefore be able to simply step to the side and watch the robot keep charging!!!

sorry fellas but nice guys DO finish last.....if someone is out to harm you or your friends then be a man and a friend and take care of business.....otherwise join a monastery if you want to be nice to would be attackers........i read about nice guys all the time getting assaulted because they underestimated the threat in their face.....if a man throws his fist at you then drunk or not he intends to do you serious harm......and believe me when you wake up the next day and your eye is black or your teeth are missing you'll probably say " shit i wish i took care of business".

I dunno man... a friend like that needs to change his behaviour. He doesn't need a helping hand to attack people when he's drunk. If he attacks someone he deserves to pay for it, otherwise (if you help him fight) you guys are TWO assholes making the streets unsafe for innocent people, and being successful at it none the less. I prefer one asshole getting knocked out instead, and maybe realising that he deserved it... then maybe next time he won't start trouble again.
