You give your friend that little speech the next day. When the shit hits the fan you help your buddy. Unless you are really a little chicken shit and are hiding behind those excuses to keep your own ass out of a scrap...

If he was a close buddy I guess I would help him, but then again, if he was close I would also not let him get into the fight in the first place. I wouldn't want friends who picks fights for no reason.
As it turns out, my "buddy" obviously wanted to fight that guy, and he got his wish granted. What neither he nor I knew was that he had friends nearby, and they jumped in after 3 seconds had passed, and after another 2-3 seconds my buddy was knocked out, and my attacker stopped attacking, and I went over to my buddy. The guys left. I checked if my buddy was ok (breathing and bones in face were ok), and made sure someone called an ambulance.

Sure, it would have been better if only that guy was in the fight, and it was a one on one fight. But I feel no obligation to help a guy out who is not a close friend, when he decides to attack someone for no reason. Sure, I feel sorry for him too, but in a way he got what he deserved.
I told him exactly what happened the day after, and he was chocked to hear he had done that and apologized several times for fucking our night up so badly. We were having a blast until he started the trouble.

I guess it boils down to how well the attackers stalked their victims.

Did you read about Chai Vang in the midwest?

He was a relatively peacfull man, who served in the Army national guard, attained a sharpshooter qualification badge and was awarded a good conduct medal during his service. He was also an avid hunter, usually going alone.

There was an escalation of sorts involving 6 or 7 people. My guess is that they outnumbered him and said something bordering derogatory and threatening. He shot them and walked away without remorse.

          That's plain cold.

Another example is Lance Thomas, the jeweler who got ambushed and held at gun point several times and managed to shoot his way out of each escalation. He wasn't trying to be a Rambo, he was just trying to stay alive.

These men seemed like easy targets.

I agree with you... but if one of my friends makes a habit out of this sort of thing I start distancing myself from them.

              Ditto.

You can say what you want to your friend, but you can't change him (or her) even if your intentions are good and you're pulling them out of trouble.

You can't change people, Lu - especially if they are generally ignorant or unwilling to engage your concern.

Fall to your knees and start screaming "kill me!!! come on fucker...life's not worth living! just do me a favor!" then start sobbing, and watch the guy's eyes widen and then see him walk away.

Jimmy Kimmel asked Chuck Liddell the same question. If a guy charges at you, what do you do? Liddell said he is a striker so he would just straight punch the guy. I bet Hughes would have looking to shoot. There is no one answer to this question. Just depends on your art.

start bashing your own face into things, break a bottle over your head, face plant into a table...etc. Turn the broken piece of bottle towards yourself and scream for him to take it...do you a favor.
