  • escape when being mounted

Hey guys. I don't train grappling, so I must ask you if this sort of escape chuck lidell does at the very beginning of this fight when he is mounted, is a somewhat "recommended" way to escape? I have escaped this way when grappling with friends who, like me only know basics, and then it worked. But does it work against a little more experienced grappler, or can he just hold his knees together to prevent that escape?
I have not seen more advanced grapplers pull of this escape though, that's why I'm asking.

Very dangerous to try against an experienced grappler. They're going to pull a mounted triangle on you the second you go for that.

Not only that, but extending your arms like that while mounted is just asking for it.

Ok, so if if we are tvo grapplers, each with say 3 years training in bjj, and one of us tries that escape, it's pretty sure he's gonna get pwned with a mounted trangle? It's like basically giving your opponent the triangle?

Given three years NO grappler would try that escape. There are simply better, more efficient escapes than that risky one shown. So yes, if each grappler had 3 years experience and one of them tried it, he'll get stuck in a mounted triangle.

              Thanks for the info guys.
Guess that explains why I never see that escape in UFC or Pride FC.

to be perfectly honest, ive been grappling for 2 years consitently now and the mount escape i use most is the very first one they teach in bjj.

its the first set, "Control one arm and one leg same side and bridge... "

to this day, this basic escape is the one i use most. sometimes i can nail it as soon as im mounted. i also like to control that leg while distracting them with something else so i can reverse them when the time is right and i have their arm.

Uhh.... Upa, Shrimp, Upa, Shrimp, Upa, Shrimp.. until one works.... mount escape basics... I dont think theres anything more effective than that combo.
It's what you'll see the best in the world do. Your not alone in using that mount escape as one of your primary escapes.

yeah, even if that one fails because they saw it and moved to counter it, it will give you the chance to push your hips out or push on their leg to make space for you to put them in guard or something. its great. or sometimes ill go for the upa real slow just to make them move to the side to give me room lol.

i like to bait alot too if im mounted and cant escape. sometimes its easier letting them go for what they think is gonna be an easy armbar and escaping out from under them when they move up to finish me.

It's funny how often the techniques from the first few weeks of training end up being the ones we successfully pull off the most often. Basic escapes, basic chokes, arm-locks, etc..

Up a shrimp, up a shrimp.. I don't get it.

What about just grabbing his nuts and say "geh' off me mahfacka, or I'll crush yo nutsack!"?

That's BJJ-ese for "bridge escape [upa]" "elbow knee/hip escape [shrimp/ebi]" "bridge escape" "elbow-knee/hip escape".

each school has their own names. we call the ebi escape "snake move"

My most reliable mount escape is to get a little bit on my left side, step over and hook his right foot with mine, then I turn to my right and drag hit foot across and over my left leg, bringing me to my right side and a loose enough half guard where I can just pull my leg out and get full guard.
