  • Super Noob needs help

I am 34, out of shape, have a wife, a 3 1/2 year old daughter and a 6 month old son. I live in Sayville, LI. I have always wanted to join a martial arts school. In college and high school I was active in Football and Baseball and when I graduated was a personal trainer. I then fell into the marriage complacency curse (no excuses, I take full responsibility for my slothiness). In any event, I want to train, get serious about something again, and get mentally, spiritually, and physically fit. Martial Arts interests me and I want my children to do it as soon as possible. I have an endless amount of questions, and I put it under the MMA BJJ topic because most of the stuff I have researched seems to fall under that category. For anyone familiar with Long Island / Suffolk County any suggestions or experiences good or bad? And for anyone for general comments, please feel free to put your 2 cents in for advice or suggestions...I am looking for I guess an all around experience.

    Glelas:

You sound exactly like me when I started training Nov, 2005. I was 34, married with a 3.5 y.o. daughter. I used to train traditional arts as a kid. I wanted to try some ground type work. I found a great school in Tempe, AZ to start with BJJ. I have also incorporated MT to my training for the last 6 months.

I have increased my cardio and dropped about 30-40 lbs since starting. I recommend to just get off the computer and go train! Getting there the first time is the hardest. After that, it will be hard to stay away!

    Good luck!!!

      Welcome Gelas-

I think that of the styles that generally fall under the MMA umbrella (boxing, Muay Thai, BJJ, etc.), BJJ or grappling might be the best place to start if you haven't got any prejudices. I'll give you my reasons and you can decide if they apply to you:

      1. Burns jillions of calories, increases strength throughout the body (all muscles used), works the cardiovascular system.

      2. Less likely to get injured (IF you are training with a decent group and instructor). BJJ has the potential for greater injury than striking arts, but it's possible to roll full strength and nobody gets injured (not counting pulled muscles and the like). Some people are going to disagree on this, but I hold that if you are tapping out when you should, your partners are being careful when they should, and your instructor is enforcing both those things, then injuries in BJJ should be fairly uncommon.

      3. The learning curve in grappling is better than striking arts. Train BJJ solidly for six months and you will be making fools of newcomers regardless of thier size. Seeing your progress like that keeps it fun.

      4. Schools everywhere. If you move or don't like your gym, there will be another grappling gym nearby. A wrestler can join a sambo gym and transfer what he knows, and both of them can join a BJJ place just the same.

Okay, so I know some folks on the board are going to disagree with some of my general statements (like #2). They are wrong, I am right and if someone asks, I'll tell them why .

          5. BJJ uses all twelve alphabets and 23,000,002 techniques. Bruce Lee oncw came back from the dead to defeat China, but Hoyce Gracie got to him first and tapped him out instantly.

            6. An unexpected chemical reaction took place between Bruce and Royce gracie, creating a single combined version of each fighter - they call him HRUCE!

Hruce Lee once defeated Jubaji AND Thai Bri in a three-way internet troll match. As a result both the losers took up Knug Fu and became excellent formsmen.

When Hruce Lee eats kim chi, it causes volcanoes to errupt and the ocean floor to crack, releasing super-heated lava that cools and forms a new Hruce Lee.

Are you sure it's Hruce and not Bryce? 'Cause I know a guy named Bryce and I'm wondering if that could be him.

                    You could always ask....

"Excuse me, Bryce....this may sound like a strange question, but were you born from a freak chemical reaction involving Bruce Lee and Royce Gracie?"

Hruce Lee once develped a three-inch punch with so much force that one name wasn't enough to contain him without reaching critical mass.

Hruce Lee once developed a three-inch punch, transferring so much energy that the water vapor in the air around his fist became super-heated steam, killing off all the bacteria in the vicinity.

What the heck is with your post count, dude? It's like the Hruce Lee of Defend.net post counts.

C'mon now, even THAT is offensive to Hruce Lee...
