Monkeys the new weapon of Paris gangs

    Jon Henley in Paris
    Wednesday September 27, 2000

With pitbulls, dobermans and rottweilers under fire from the French authorities, youth gangs in the depressed city suburbs have discovered an alternative way to intimidate their rivals - with attack monkeys.
"They're ultra-fashionable," said Didier Lecourbe, a police officer from the depressed Paris suburb of Aubervilliers. "There are dozens of them. Kids take them out on leads, and even carry baby monkeys around in nappies. But these animals can be very dangerous indeed."

Imported illegally through Spain from Gibraltar, Morocco or Algeria, the Barbary apes are known for their powerful limbs, sharp teeth and short tempers. Veterinary experts say they can be turned into frightening and effective weapons.

"They live naturally on rocks or in a desert environment," said Marie-Claude Bomsel of the natural history museum in Paris. "Removed from their natural habitat, they can become highly aggressive. They bite, and their favoured method of attack is to hurl themselves at people's heads."

Police believe as many as 500 Barbary apes may have been smuggled into France in the past two years. Bought for about £30 each by youngsters visiting their families in north Africa, they change hands on the council estates around Paris for as much as £300.

"Now the authorities have cracked down on pitbulls and the rest, apes look like becoming the new weapon of choice," said Mr Lecourbe. "We've heard of monkey-fights being run in tower block basements."

Ms Bomsel said the museum had received dozens of telephone calls from owners wanting to know how to deal with violent monkeys, or how to get rid of them. "The zoos don't want to know because apes that have grown up outside their natural environment will not live with others," she said. A spokeswoman for the the society for the protection of animals said the society had taken in more than 40 apes in the past 18 months and its Paris animal homes were full.

I freakin love it. All you international type bad asses best watch your step in France. The only thing worse than getting your ass kicked by a snail eating moped riding Frenchie is getting your ass kicked by his pet monkey. Perhaps Pit Dog can diversify into raising ‘Game Monkeys?’

I'd wager that your average chimpanzee could tear apart NHB fighter.

I've heard those things are really nasty when they get mad.

In anthro 100 in college they told us that the average YOUNG ADULT chimpanzee can /could bench press 500 lbs(dont ask me how they figured this out . On the Willem deThours kuntao website he tells this story about how he decided to try to see how well he could do against a 70lb macac(spelling right?) well ,to be brief...its really, really, really not a good thing to do...

                LOL Mickey!

I read about that also. Can you freakin believe it. I do know I'd hate to get my ass kicked by some little punk and his 15 pound monkey.

Hey J.B., chipanzees are extremely dangerous and way stronger than people. But, they're in the ape class and tend to eat little monkeys.

                later dude.....

Ronin !I went to the Kuntao/DeThours website to refresh my memeory and the article was gone ...but what I remeber from the article and what he said at a seminar was that he used to walk by this group of macacues every day,he mentioned it to his teacher ,who encouraged him to have a go at one. Basically . the thing moved with blinding speed and ferocity and slapped him around and looked at himlike" are you F&*%$#@#G crazy ?" I cant to justice to this story...maybe someone else has heard him tell it ?

I watch WAY to much discover channel!

Small correction...there are only two "groups" of Chimp's that actually hunt monkeys as a primary source of food. I say groups because they are both located in the same specific region. However, to contradict myself, ALL chimp's are carnivorous and will hunt meat when times are tough.

That was a good episode if anyone else watched it. I just wish they would do a special on wolverines. How could they miss such a bad arse critter! LOL!

                        Peace

Hey Bad Karma, I don't know about wolverines but the other night they had a show on the african honey badger, which is pretty close to a wolverine. They're ultra agressive and very game. They like to raid beehives, and they're not immune to the sting, they just don't give a sh!t, now that's game. I also heard that when encountered by humans they don't go for the throat, they go for the NUTS! And this is one of those animals that when it bites down, doesn't let go. I would run if I ever saw one of those. I'd like to see a chimp fight a honey badger, that'd be brutal.

                            Types of chimps

                            Not to get technical but....

I believe there are two types of chimps in the world. "Normal" chimpanzees that we have seen in the circus, TV, etc... and the far more rare Bonobos which Jane Goodall studied.

My understanding was that the Bonobo's were far less aggressive then the "normal" chimpanzees, and did not hunt monkeys, or other chimps. Also as a matter of trivia, Bonobos apparently have sex many times a day, and use it as a way to do everything from settling disputes over food to just saying hello.

hehe.. man, this is too funny.. im sure its very inconpsticuos(sp?) for a bunch of 30 or 40 teenage punks to go around at midnight and bring half a dozen of there pet chimps with them to brawl..
chimps are 10 times stronger than hunans, far more agile and quick, and on top of that they are animals, they dont have the stop mechanisms that we humans have in ourselves from years and years of being brought up in society.. they kill without remorse,(well to my knowledge)..
hehe.. i would also like to know how a chimp would do against a pitbull..
hmm.. a man versus a chimp? doesnt sound like a smart thing to do.. hehe, unless he used drunken monkey style, but than again, the other chimp could take this the wrong way and start to settle the dispute "the monkey" way...or they could just be saying hello.. we'll never know
