  • One style.

Of the main MMA arts Wrestling, BJJ, Muay Thai, Boxing what one style by itself ofers the best chance for success in a general confrontation.

If we harken back to the early UFC I would suggest that Wrestling dominated more that any other style in a era before crosstraining.

From those arts one on one it is BJJ.

        In response to both your points ;

        BJJ

        and ...

        BJJ.

Even today a lot of the wrestlers still struggle to finish fights, despite their often superior positioning.

Being a predominatly BJJ person.... I dont know about all your answers.

Assuming in your hypothetical that its one on one, than yeah I'd have to go with BJJ.

But for your general confrontation, whatever..... depends on your idea of confrontation, school yard fights, bar fights, getting jumped, confrontations as a result of being a LEO, GANG WARFARE.

It all depends... I'd proly have to go with boxing or wrestling for a general sense.

In the perfect one on one situation though, yeah bjj has got it.

              Being a BJJ man myself.

Being a BJJer myself I would say you have a good point with that selection.

Let me suggest that in a match with an unskilled opponent that boxing may be the favorable skill as it offers the fastest finishes in the knockout.

I agree, wrestling. Wrestling offers the quickest way to end a fight, the slam/takedown/throw. On hard surfaces these can instantly end fights, or seriously hinder your opponent.

out of all those choices, I'd go muay thai. In an all round situation, street, sport, health, muay thai seems to excel over the other options simply because you can hit your opponents first in every situation against the other arts, it fights alot dirtier than the other arts presented and has a wider range of attacks.

That is a good point. Furthermore if you meet a skilled adversary he is most likely skilled in wrestling and wrestling skill can keep you safe from these same devestating attacks.

Boxing is a highly developed system in the United States. If practiced to a high degree it can quickly neutralize virtually all aggressors. However is a boxer unschooled in wrestling meets a wrestler unschooled in boxing the wrestler usually wins. The most probable skill one is to run into would be wrestling.

being good at any of these arts will be useful in confrontations.

however, if you really want us to pick a style i would say mt. mt gives you some skills/attributes that are a little more sd oriented than bjj inmop. for example in mt you learn to take hits, evade strikes, and counter attack people effectively. pure bjj guys can be made to ball up quite fast if you know how to strike. this is actually what destroys a loot of people. when the strikes start coming at them, they freeze or ball up which is exactly what an experienced striker would want, were as an experienced striker would not stop evading/defending/countering the strikes coming at them.

mt also gives you the ability to react and move much faster than most people. grapplers are also fast, but mt would give you footwork to move in and out of ranges while bjj would give you only access to one range. not only that, but mt includes bone conditioning. this can be absolutely devastating in a real confrontation.

Hitting you opponent first may be unwise as they judge may decide you were the aggressor. I agree with Muay Thai capabilities. The kicks knees and elbows will beat a boxer of comperable skill. Muay Thai clinches do very well against wrestlers. It is often difficult to find good Muay Thai instruction in the US. Many claim to know Muay Thai and really teach western kickboxing with leg kicks and checks.
