Wikipedia's all-time medal statistics show that historically the US has not been a power at all in Greco-Roman (17th on the total medals list, with just three golds) but that we have dominated the rest of the world in freestyle (almost twice as many golds and total medals as Russia, the next most successful country). This makes sense in view of DJColdFusion's observation that Greco gets virtually no government or commercial support in this country. Folkstyle wrestling, on the other hand, gets lots of financial support through collegiate programs, and folkstyle and freestyle are close enough that US college wrestlers can do very well in international competition.
