  • Elite XC, Kedzie vs. Carano

What did you all think? I was rooting for Kedzie bigtime, especially since Carano is a Muay Thai fighter who'd only had 3 MMA fights when they decided to make her the "face of women's MMA"--which had a lot to do with her dad being Glenn Carano, of Dallas Cowboys fame...a millionaire and casino owner in Nevada who just so happens to know the fight promoter, Gary Shaw, through boxing shows in Reno.

It seemed like this fight was kind of set up for Carano to win; after saying she'd "fight anyone" a ton of fighters who DO have MMA background were turned down (including Debi Purcell, Roxanne Modafferi, Erin Toughill, Amanda Buckner, Jennifer Howe, Tara LaRosa, etc.) I also thought it was weird how the rounds were only 3 minutes, which someone pointed out to me gives yet another advantage to Carano as a stand-up fighter, along with the 15-second rule.

Anyways, I was really bummed that Kedzie lost. Oh yeah, and Carano didn't make weight for this fight, but she was only 1.5 lbs over, instead of 4 lbs. over when she fought Rosi Sexton. Gina was probably 20 lbs heavier than Sexton by the time they fought. Since she hasn't been able to make weight for two out of four of her fights I think she should be fighting in a different weight class...

I was rooting for Kedzie aswell, she trains at a cousin gym. Oh well, it was a very entertaining fight. I was disturbed when they stood renzo up. Some rules are to apease the casual common fan but the cage looked huge, which would be good for the grappler. As for not making weight 1.5 pounds is one thing 4-20 pounds is another.

Also some people are going to hate Carano because she's pretty and gets more attention from guys then they do. I'm not saying that's how you feel but it's been my experience. I just feel bad for girls that go through that. Her good looks and femeninity don't lessen her accomplishments at all. Her silver spoon may give her an edge but there's more to her than that superficial bullshit and nobody really knows what she's had to go through but her. People often seem to make light of anothers struggles/problem/accomplishments because they're different than their own. Each individual is different, not all pretty rich white girls have it easy. She's earned my respect just by getting in there and exceeded my expectations by winning.

LOL! No hate here, but I could do without the "face of women's MMA" and "I'll fight anyone" comments when she won't step up and do so. A lot of people were saying that Kedzie was set up to lose. I have way more respect for her than that but I do think she had a lot of handicaps, like the fact that rounds were only three minutes and that her opponent weighed probably about ten lbs more than her during the actual fight. Plus I think the face of women's MMA should be someone who maybe has put there blood sweat and tears into women's MMA. Like Debi Purcell...who would kick Gina's ass...

Plus I think Kedzie and Debi are way cuter.

Its the business side of building a fighter, I suppose.

And it's only smart of her management to not have her fight anyone who would kick her ass (like all the stars of women's MMA mentioned above.) What I'm wondering, and some friends of mine were discussing, is whether it always feels this set up. Or whether it's as set-up as we think it is or if we're just getting into the conspiracy theory mode...

I guess the 3-minute round thing could just coincidentally favor a stand-up fighter, and might not have anything to do with them trying to set one up to win, right? And I guess a lot of people drop weight to fight in an unnatural weightclass and end up weighing a lot more than their opponent at the time of the fight, right? Oh and the fifteen second rule.... and why she was picked to fight in the first place.... Kinda makes me wonder. Interested in thoughts.

Yeah, with Rosi Sexton, that was ridiculous. Rosi usually fights at 125 but was offered the fight at 135 and then Gina weighed in at 139 and said she couldn't and wouldn't lose more weight (and was obviously dehydrated and had cut a lot already). I guess she normally fights at 145 and walks around at 150. I wonder how much she cut to be able to weigh in at 140 (excuse me, at 141.5) and the fact that she couldn't even drop enough weight to do that makes me wonder.

Gina Carano is so sexy and likable. Before this fight, i was against womens MMA, but now, after seeing how exciting that fight was, im all for it. I hope Gary Shaw signs Erin Toughill too.

Erin is awesome, I think she fights at 165 though. What is she, 7-1?

I would love to see Roxanne Modafferi on there, too. She's awesome.

Ooh, and Tara LaRosa. Is she the best ranked in women's MMA right now?
