  • Toughman contest

I am signing up for the local toughman contest, it is a MMA event, in the Dayton area.

Have any of you participated in one of these and if so what should I expect?

My background is pretty heavy into wrestling, brief exposure to bjj and judo. I have been studying Kuk Sul Do for about 2 years now so I feel that I am a fairly well rounded fighter.

What is the general skill level of the fighters at these events?

Most are Brawlers who are going to try and beat the hell out of you with ground and pound.

Thanks. I will have to definitely pay attention to that. I have fairly fast heavy hands so I am hoping to be able to make use of them. I have a very fast round house kick and hoping that will give me some space. The rules prohibit knees and elbows to the head so that is a bit of a relief.

Do you have takedowns and throws? Do you know what to do in a ground fight?

I am fairly good at takedowns and takedown defense. I know a number of throws like the hip toss, firemans, single leg, double leg as well as others. I made it to state in wrestling my soph-senior years of high school. In my martial arts class we do a fair amount of grappling and submissions such as arm bars and various chokes. Many of them won't work the same since we practice with our doboks on and this event is no gi.

Go out and have fun with it. Eat a light breakfast and take some fruit and water. When is the event?

How is your cardio? Do you run or swim?

I work out about 4 hours a week. I currently can run 5miles in less than 30 mins without pushing it.

Man, I know guys who work out 4 hours a day. How old are you? Do you weight train? Spar? Do you have a coach or instructor? What is your fighting weight? Current weight?

32, I weigh 165lbs, I have put on about 15lbs of muscle over the last year and currently have about 7-10% body fat. I have been working with an instructor for the last couple of years. I plan to fight at my current weight.

Are you planning to win 1st place?

I have no misconceptions of being a professional fighter. I would just like to see how good I am or am not. Of course I do not have a goal of losing either.

Is there prize money or trophies involved?

I honestly have no idea. I just figured I would like to see how good am really am or am not.
