What type of guard do you fags preferr and why? I like the butterfly guard because it doesn't look gay like a closed guard, but beyond that I have more of an immediate threat with sweeps. What I give up for by missing out on triangle and armbar opportunities I gain in chance to leglock and I think its easier to go for kimuras. Also its easier to get to my side and turn into my opponent. Against a good grappler with good passes I may use a closed guard.

I prefer an aggressive guard. If I begin sitting back and trying to "bake" an opponent ( unless I am SEVERELY outweighed) then I feel a bit like I should LET the guy pound on me to get the point across that I should be doing something. I feel like constantly moving from a closed guard, to an open guard, to a butterfly or half butterfly, to a spider, etc... I like them all, but my main objective is to push them away so as to regain my feet, or sweep them. If those don't work within a couple minutes, then I'm looking for the Kimura.

Guard
Different guards work for different people, it is all how good you are at your system. I try to use all of them in training because you never know what you are going to see in the ring. The only disadvantage that I have seen with the butterfly guard is that you can't get the armlocks like you can in the traditional closed guard. I know you said that you gain the leg locks but it just seems to me that leglocks always end up in a big crap shoot most of the time. Don't get me wrong leg locks are very good but I just like to be comfortable and play the cards I am dealt. If you are fighting someone that is very good at passing the closed guard it is nice to be able to change styles to the butterfly. I like going up against a big meathead ground and pound wrestlers and use the butterfly guard because it keeps distance and sets up great for the armbars.

I dont like the guard but if i have to do one I'l be in closed guard, make sure my opponent is really close to me try to make him use is strenght and then boom a good choke or a triangle or a arm bar.

Patterson,
Could you describe the "butterfly guard" please. I am unfamiliar with the term, maybe I know it but not by the same name. Thanks.
Personally I play fluid guard most of the time. I mean that I just constantly change which guard I am in trying to see which makes the top guy the most uncomfortable. If he is unhappy then my chance to catch him with something goes way up! The only reason to play guard is to catch him right
Peace.

I know what you're saying though. It is easier to get an arm from closed guard.
