He has a boxing background, but go figure, he usually loses via KO, or TKO (ref stoppage). While standing and exchanging, he never moves his head, and never throws his punches in bunches, he just tries for the one-punch KO.
In his prefight interviews, he always says he's going to put alot of hurting on his opponent, and/or that he's going to put them to sleep, but he's usually the one that's being put on queer street (or close to it).
I've recently read that he's been working alot on his subs.
I also read just today that he just won a match via toe-hold (figure 4 on the foot) just recently, but I don't have the particulars.

I've seen probably 95% of Gary's fights and the main reason he continues to keep getting fights is because he gives his all every night and makes for exciting fights.
Gary has had somewhere around 20 or so fights and his record is more or less split down the middle.
How many times have we really seen Gary get mauled out there? Besides the Yvel fight, which was over before it got going, Gary has been a game fighter in pretty much every match I've ever seen him in.
I'll admit that early in his career Gary came out looking to bang and wasn't as well trained as some guys - but even he admits that. He gave up in his early bouts because he didn't know the game all that well and if you're somewhere you don't know how to fight from or you're scared of something - it can make a big difference.
Keep in mind, up until just a couple years ago Gary was still a full-time auto worker, fighting was just an side job.
The Gary that comes in prepared, focused and in shape is a force of devastation.
Who's seen his fights with Roberts, Herrera, Taktarov, and Amir? Gary is dangerous as Hell and is probably the 2nd strongest guy in all of NHB. Look at his fights with Vovchanchin, Frye, and Ruas. Both of those guys are A+ grade fighters and Gary took the fight to them.
These days he's training with wrestlers like Coleman and for this last fight, Tom Erikson.
Gary is the top "gunslinger" fighter in the 'biz in that he can beat anyone at a given time. He's got more power in his arms than ANYONE in NHB (Robinson included), all he needs to do is land a flush shot.
I think his victory over Dirty Bob might give us a window into what Gary has the potential to be - a scary fellow on the ground. With his training with the wrestlers and some submission work, Gary can be a top 10 fighter again. There's NO WAY IN HELL you're going to be able to power out of a submission he's doing correctly, plus his guard isn't that bad already. Think about it - nobody has ever really hurt Gary from his back before. Against Coleman he even managed to regain his feet.
All I'm saying is that Gary is exciting to watch, gives his all, and is trying to get better. Ask any mainstream fighter what they think of Gary and you'll hear praise from almost all of them.
