  • BREAKING NEWS! Both Sherk and Franca test positive for steroids!

UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk (Pictures) has tested positive for Nandrolone Metabolite following his title defense July 7 in Sacramento, Calif, the state's athletic commission revealed Thursday. Sherk scored a dominating five-round decision win over Brazilian Hermes Franca (Pictures), whom the CSAC also said tested positive for the banned substance Drostanolone.

After testing both "A" and "B" samples of the urine specimen provided by Sherk the day before the fight, the UFC champion's Nandrolone level was certified by the Director of Science and Technology at the lab conducting the tests at 12 ng/ml, two times higher than the threshold allowed by the CSAC, said the state regulatory body.

The Minnesotan lightweight has been fined $2,500 and suspended 365 days from the date of the fight, including an additional 10 days that would need be served if Sherk reapplied for a license to fight in the Golden State.

Calls to Sherk and his trainer Greg Nelson were not immediately returned.

Franca was also fined $2,500 -- the maximum fine the CSAC can levy -- and suspended through July 5, 2008. The Brazilian told MMAweekly.com that he had used a "banned substance" prior to the fight.

"I offer only an explanation and not an excuse," Franca said. "I made a decision during a difficult time in my training for the fight that I regret."

Saying an injured ankle prompted him to look for ways to "accelerate the healing process" Franca said he made the "shortsighted" choice to use a banned substance. "Under the pressure of literally not being able to pay next months bills I made a choice," he told MMAweekly. "I had to fight and did whatever I could to do so."

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva (Anderson Silva' class='LinkSilver'>Pictures) and Nathan Marquardt (Pictures), participants in July 7's other title fight in Sacramento, Calif., were both cleared for any banned substances.

This news comes on the heels of a CSAC report that revealed 28 violations, including nine for steroids, of its anti-doping policy from March 31, 2007 through July 6, 2007. Seventeen of the 28 violators were fighters in mixed martial arts contests.
The industry pioneer in UFC, Bellator and all things MMA (aka Ultimate Fighting).

I'm sick of people using these substances to become a "better" version of themselves. Why not get a titanium skeleton inserted and then go in a MMA contest.

            2 things to say.

First: Sherk had 2 times the amount in his blood that's normally allowed. Is that a rediculous amount? Or is this a trivial amount, that could easily be a false positive?

Second: Steroids are dangerous, in rediculous amount. That's something that show didn't say. The amount used by pro bodybuilders on average is hundreds of times more than should be used. In fact, when used in very small dosages(not to build muscle) it acts as an anti-aging drug and can keep you at your 21 year old libido/muscle mass/engergy levels. Instead of these levels falling, you just keep them where they are.

Did I read these posts correctly? Did some idiot say that these guys are disgusting(or the act was disgusting)? Franca said he couldn't pay his bills, and was very appologetic. Apparently you've never been broke, or underprivelaged. That's a VERY ignorant statement to make. I'd love to see you live a few years dead broke, barely scraping by, then say you wouldn't use roids to keep your job. What a complete waste air you are.

I Must be that idiot.... Yes it is disgusting, Just the fact that somebody that "has made it" would stoop to that level... Piss on them... And franca and sherk are both damn good fighters too... If you want to hump up on roids just because your "barely making it" than might want to try Pro wrestling cause MMA is not for you... It's not like it was a surprise test or something either, They'll get tested their PRO FIGHTER'S...Fighters that are supposed to be fighting on even levels...So WTF???

Sherk tested 12 ng/ml. I think the doctors or whatever say the most a pro athlete who trains alot could produce naturally (without roids) is up to 6 ng/ml.

Royce Gracie recently tested 50 ng/ml.

I think Sherk just trained so hard and combined with those 25 supplements that he took produced such high Nandrolone levels.

Also, theres controversy w/ nandrolone testing:

Urine analysis as a method of detecting nandrolone abuse has recently become somewhat controversial, following studies by the University of Aberdeen showing that the metabolite product can also show up in urine in quantities above the upper limit from a combination of high-protein diets utilising the legal nutritional supplement creatine and hard cardiovascular exercise. The reason for this unexpected result has not been determined. Another possible (though unlikely) reason for a false positive result is the consumption of beef from cattle treated with steroids including nandrolone (used in overturning the verdict against the bobsleigh racer, Lenny Paul). Heavy consumption of the essential amino acid lysine (as indicated in the treatment of cold sores) has also shown false positives in some and was cited by American Shotputter C.J. Hunter as the reason for his positive test. A final possible cause of incorrect urine test results is the presence of metabolites from other anabolic steroids. As a result of the numerous overturned verdicts, the testing procedure was reviewed by UK Sport [1] in 2000.

They get paid penuts...and from what I understand, both fighters were roided, so they seem pretty even.
The fight game is fickle...I personally don't fault either one of them for doing it...especially in light of their fiscal responsibilities to their families. Like J-Luck said:

and this garbage..."their advantages on roids creates weakness, That S#*t cant be good for your mind.." are you an expert on this subject? What are your credentials on steroids and their usages, or better yet, their physiological and psychological effects upon the human body...if you do, I'll be willing to listen, but as it is now, you're just another ignorant shit-talking armchair warrior. Don't EVEN try to be an armchair psychiatrist or physician...please, just stop now while you're ahead.

Sherk's fight purse was 14,000 for showing up and another 14,000 for winning, i dont blame him. Hell, Stephen Bonner (who was busted for roids after his rematch with Griffen) got paid more than Sherk and they didnt even televise his fight.

i dont think that sherk was stupid enough to inject deca durabolin at any point in the past 18 months (which is its detection time). the man knows to much. do i think he uses steroids... yes, as most top athletes do whether you like to hear it or not. beating AAS testing is much easier than one would think if you know the correct substances to use, or have a ready available supply of epitestosterone.

Well as long as I'm not a complete jackass... I don't need any factual evidence especially if I'm just stating my opinion.. I see no future for illegal drugs in a sporting environment..If you get caught you pay.. I wonder how bad that $2,500 G's hurt?? Here's a little armchair psychology for you... If franca said he was just trying to make ends meet and was reaching for straws, Wouldn't that indicate a low self esteem or at least an overall insecurity of his NATURAL ability's???? Now can I be a complete jackass??
