  • Which style

    Hey All,

I'm interested in starting to learn a fighting style, but i an unsure as to which would be for me. I'm hoping to give some information which would hopefully lead to some suggestions

I'm 22 years old, i have never (except for when i was 6) done any form or any style. I'm very fit, 5'6, 61kg (hopeing to get to about 70ish), and have been told by friends etc that speed is my key.

I have been looking into Hapkido, and from what i have found there is a lot of throwing involved. Basically, i would like to be able to defend myself in situations out on the streets and would like to be able to strike very well. Personally i don't think that throwing opponants would benefit me, as i am short i would think that being in close range of an opponant for a prolonged period of time would not do me any good.

If anyone could suggest some styles that is well suited to shorter, faster people like myself it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Ryan

    Hi Ryan,

Whose to say what style would be good for you? There are short, light guys whom are good at a lot of styles - like muay thai, judo, karate, silat etc.

Why not look at the martial arts schools in your area, call up the instructor and talk with him a little bit. Try one of their classes and decided which one you want to go with.

    Good luck

      Thanks

      Thanks Tom,

That answer provided me with the route to take. I am interested in Jeet Kuno Do, however, i do not think that there is many/any institues within Sydney, especially in the campbelltown region.

      Thanks Again Tom

First thing you have to realize is that learning a martial art does not make you bullet proof out on the street. People of various degrees in various martial arts get owned all the time. That being said there are "Functional Martial Arts"(Boxing,MuayThai,Judo,SubmissionWrestling...ect) that you can augment yourself with that may help you do well in a physical struggle out on the street, but don't kid yourself to think you can train to handle any situation. Can you defend against someone coming up behind you with a brick to your head?

Question: What is your profession or what is your career goal?

I ask this because outside of being a doorman/bouncer, security guard, or police officer it is my belief that training in a RBSD system would prove to be years of training for nothing because you wouldn't get a chance to ever use it. Where as if you trained in MMA you could compete and test your skill against other fighters, maybe even win a medal or belt and you will have spent years doing something that hasn't been a waste of time and you know that what you know works. If you really want to learn RBSD in a civillian aspect here's my advice. MMA+Kali+VerbalJudo+Keeping your pride in check when dealing with others.

Also, I would suggest to be well rounded in all aspects of fighting. (Striking, Throwing, Ground Fighting...Ect) You never know what your opponent is capable of so train to handle whatever it is he throws at you.

Well this is just my 2 cents. Hope it was helpfull.

There are many throws in Judo that favour the shorter person - if your center of gravity is already lower than your opponent's it's that much easier to toss them.

Getting into clinch range is going to be the problem then. How about adding good old boxing?

            Boxing+Judo=good "basic" self-defense

            MuayThai+Judo=better "basic" self-defense...IMO

For self-defense I think these three are the best. JKD, JJJ and Arnis.

Main thing is try to avoid fights whenever possible. A lot of times people get jumped or they have weapons. In the street anything goes.

If someone has a gun or knife pointing at you just do as they want and most likely you will not get hurt. Also learn how to use a gun and keep it with you if it is legal. Also it is a good idea to have a knife with you all the time if it is legal. A knife is a better close range weapon than a gun. It can go through body armor unlike a bullet.

Remember you have to use your head. You can get in trouble and go to prison even if you shot or stabbed in self-defense. It is better to go to prison than die though.

              Arnis (weapon style includes striking)

JJJ (MMA type style with striking/grappling)

JKD (Bruce Lee's style, inclues striking/grappling)

              Learn to use a gun

                  Thanks

Thanks for all the replies. As i said, the main reason i want to learn a style is to be able to handle myself in sticky situations. I have always been a fan of JKD, so i will probably look into classes for it firther. Only downside is what i have found for JKD here in Australia only seems to be in one place.
Thanks for the videos, interesting to watch. I couldn't dedicte my life to it, but i am after the ability to get out of situations as well as some confidence when walking the streets. I'm a very level headed person, i'd much rather walk away and live then fight and chance dieing. In saying that, somtimes you can not walk away though.

                  Thanks guys

                  Ryan
