  • Leg grab escape?

What can you do when someone grabs your leg on a middle kick? i used to do a jump kick with the other leg, but that almost got my leg broken, so i'm looking for some other alternative
Btw, i'm okay on the ground, if i have to go down

It depends how they've grabbed it.

In a Muay Thai context (The grab is typically an overhook and there is typically nothing on the leg in terms of cloth for the opponent to really grab on to) the standard thing to do is to:
-VERY QUICKLY spin so your back is (briefly!!) to your opponent and your knee is pointing downwards
-Forcefully tear your foot loose from their grip and use the momentum of that action to spin you back facing your opponent.
-HANDS UP - your opponent WILL be counter-attacking you.

The motion of the spin is similar to a missed kick where the momentum takes you all the way back to your original position.

This is kinda hard to explain without the use of a video but I will give it a try. If the guy over hooks your leg (I refer to this as a Catch A) one thing you can do is very quickly reach up and capture his neck kinda like a Thai Plum position(your forearms are on each side of his neck and your hands are locked behind his head) you can then quickly jump up and force your captured leg down. You will not try to pull it out of his grab but instead force your foot to the ground. This forces your leg through his grab and then you can take him down.

Holy crap that was a bad description but try to picture what I am saying. If nothing else I will send you a video of me doing it.

Another thing you can do is as he grabs your leg move in closer and hit. BUT ALWAYS be prepared and ready for the takedown from this position. There are several things you can do once you are on the ground.

One more thing... try getting out there on the mats and playing around with this particular hold and see what you can come up wth.

i always use the spin. it works a lot. you may take some shots once you get free, but at least he wont have your leg anymore.

While it really depends on the location, opponent, and the type of grab, I will usually do something similar to what Tim described.

I grab my opponent's neck with the hand that is farthest away from his elbow and pull the elbow that is wrapped around my leg with the hand/arm that is closest to him as soon as I have the gripped his neck and his elbow I will jump into them as I kick my leg towards the ground.

As I jump into him I move my hand that is grabbing around his neck to the other side, on the same side as my trapped leg, and push his head down and away as I continue to move my leg down and my hips away until I break their grip on my leg.

Yes you can definately do that. I did not say that because I did not want to confuse anyone in the event that my explanation was bad.

When you capture his neck as you jump you can actually knee to the face with either leg. Depending on the pressure your opponent is giving you.

ITs there but the guy already has removed one of your bases of support. PErsonally, I'd avoid the knee shot and get back into a stable position as quickly as possible.

When you say "force it through his grab," do you mean you break his hold as you drive to the ground? I was taught to get in a Thai clinch and force or jump your leg through to where the hold is as close to your knee as possible and then quickly drive your foot forcefully to the ground, almost like jumping to kickstart a motorcycle. Is that close to what you're describing?

I'll second what a few other people have said. I was taught that if my leg is caught, to lean forward and shift my weight to that same leg so that it becomes too heavy and too hard to hold on to for the other guy to keep holding it. Just step through it, maybe try for a clinch, but you have to be careful, of course, and watch for a punch or even a kick to your standing leg.

I would vary that a bit. Instead of grabbing his head, throw in an overhook on the same side as the leg he has. This gives you more control than grabbing the head as well as more options once you (hopefully) get your leg back. I would also advise against jumping and just shift your weight toward the captured leg as you move closer and force it down while pulling up hard on the overhook and driving your hip in at an angle, in a sort of extended sprawl. If you free your leg, you've still got that overhook and all the options it presents.

This is turning out to be a great thread!

What would you guys do if instead of catching your leg with an overhook, your opponent catches it with an underhook?
