  • opinion- Is the cage good for the image of MMA

Like to hear you opinions on the following:

    1. Do you think MMA would get less bad press if all organisations did not fight in a cage, but used a ring etc. This would prevent reporters stating MMA is cage fighting.

    2. If one set of mma rules are adopted (ie UFC rules), do you think eventually this will limit the effectiveness of mma as a fighting style and produce more unrealistic techiques adopted by athletes, resulting in a more rigid 'style' when compared to early NHB competitiors who fought using various competion rules?

    3. Is the uneducated audience involvement (found at UFC events) going to turn MMA into a show, where entertaiment is the most import thing and realistic combat (which might not look flashy) is eventually forgotten. I have in mind how Judo changed their rules to limit ground fighting as they felt the olympic audience did not understand it, but liked to see throws.

    3. In regards to FILA Grappling attempt to take over submission wrestling and imposed one set of rules for the sport. Again will this not limit effectiveness and reduce enjoyment found in the diverse set of rules currently available in different competitions.

1.) I believe that the cage is to culturally ingrained. Taking out the cage could upset customers which could lead to less money in amateur events as well as professional ones. Also, I don't view the cage as a negative. Maybe that's your hang-up. Sure the concept of the cage can upset soccer moms but that doesn't stop the fathers from paying to watch with there kids. Here in the U.S. I believe you'll find a lot of people happy to see an organization not cave into Political Correctness because someone doesn't like the vibe it gives.

2.)The rules are primarily there for safety, and no the athletes won't go to a more rigid style or use unrealistic techniques. The sport of MMA is combative chess done at 90mph. With the point being to dominate your opponent into a checkmate.

3.)I personally don't view MMA fans as uneducated. In fact I consider them to be the opposite. I believe they are very knowledgeable of the sport, they know what's going on and what to expect, and they wouldn't have the sport turn into a WWE style phony event.

4.) If you don't like how something might change don't be passive about it. I know it might seem difficult to go up against a big, deep pocketed, organizations, but I'm sure w/ hard work and gathering lots of support you can stop the change. Or join the organization to work your way to the top to create change.

The cage is safer than a ring.

The cage is safer than a ring. The Kansas State Athletic commision mandates a cage in MMA events.
