What would be a good style to cross train in with BJJ?
I was thinking MT or TKD.
Whatever you want, really. Boxing would go well. Aikido would go well. Karate would go well. TKD would be okay - reason being that TKD fighters are more sideways in their stance and do about 70% kicking, whreas BJJ guys are a little more straight on and don't do too much kicking.
If you want to work striking, I agree, Muay Thai is good. (great actually) If you want a top game, i.e. throws etc., I'd say Judo or Wrestling would work, as would any MMA style that incorporate throws, takedowns, etc.
Thanks guys. I think im going to go to a few schools and watch them for TDK, MT, and hapkido and see what I think i will enjoy most. I start my first day of brazilian jujitsu tomorrow, so wish me luck that I dont get my ass kicked too badly lol.
just stick with jiujitsu to start with. a lot of your questions will be answered by training. as far as what to cross train.... anything can work. depends largely on your overall goal.
freestyle wrestling for takedowns
grecoroman wrestling for throwing (no gi)
judo for throwing (with gi)
cambo for legwork (jiujitsu schools often omit this)
muaythai for striking (clinch and short weapons)
boxing for striking (focus on hands)
wing chun for striking (crashing)
taekwondo and hapkido both involve a style of striking that may be at cross purposes with jiujitsu (stances are incompatible) the same could be said of most forms of kung fu.
aikido works, but takes a very long time to learn and lacks competitive elements (if this is what you are into)
still, anything CAN work, it is just a question of what you really want to accomplish. in any case, good luck with your training. enjoy!!
