  • Private Lesson Pricing

If you are an instructor, how much do you charge for private lessons? (one on one) If you are a student, how much would you pay for private lessons? I read about this topic in a very very very old thread but wanted to revisit the topic to account for inflation, geography and changing attitudes. Thanks in advance.

P.S. Please keep in mind the differences between instructors who are world renowned with big names and instructors who are trying to make a name/reputation.

my instructor david camarillo, who is considered top notch and trains all the gyms fighters in grappling, charges $100 per hour for privates. he is a blackbelt in judo as well as jiu jitsu.

i have seen some mma fighters at my gym who charge $50-$80 an hour.

I could have "Bumped" the old thread from 2003 but I have faith that I can get a decent response from the current active readership. Thanks in advance.

Hardball I have noticed a few scenerios. At a BB level it would depend on if you are teaching privately as an independent or as part of a school. When it is part of a school it is similar to how trainers get paid. The pay is usually $40-60 per lession as an independent it it can go to $75 or $80. Top instructors I have seen as $150 - 200 per lession. But like excessive said I think that is mostly becuase people don't like giving private lessions.

there are other factors as well such as if you are independent what are you teaching. Is it just self defense or are you teaching a style and can the individual achieve rank in this system?

The going rate in Tucson seems to be the amount of a month's worth of group training. So if it costs $75/month to train at the gym/dojo/whatever, that's how much it'll cost for an hour of private lessons. Some charge less but I haven't seen people charge more. I think it's well worth it when training every day is mostly drills and such, and if you really need to get specific, individual feedback. I think it's also more worth it for people who need to refine good technique rather than newbs. Most I've paid I think is $60.
