  • Training!! Need Suggestions!

I have been training for about the last 5-6 months. I have honestly dedicated my life to this.. Only thing I do besides train is work. And I do construction so business is not exactly "blooming". I am nearly 6'4 and I weigh almost 170. Thanks!

Anyway I come to you folks to find out if what I am doing and how I am doing it is right. I had my first amateur MMA fight a couple weeks back. Won by TKO in the first. Ill try to post the video if anyones interested?

Morning I bike.. anywhere from 15-30 miles.. after breakfast of course wink.gif .

An hour or so of yoga.. Still trying to find the right "style" for me..

    Rest for a bit

Goto the gym with my weight fanatic brother lol Stay there and train for about 2 hours. Give or take. Also want to mention I am really AGAINST maxing and heavy weight low rep.. I like to do lots of reps because it seems to be harder on me and more efficient, my brother on the other hand is a 6,3,1 guy and I make him look stupid when we roll/spar. Any thoughts on this would be great!

Come home.. Train stand-up on a B.O.B. and focus mitts with the Bas Rutten MMA workout tapes, for anywhere from 1 to 3 hours.

Then I usually roll for about 2 hours. I have a room in my house I dedicated to sparring.. 10x10 mats and padded walls.. Got pictures if anyone cares to see. smile.gif

Then I stretch lightly.. Bike 1-5 miles.. come home do a good session of yoga. And finally SLEEP!!

I try to sleep good. Early to bed.. Early to rise! I am also working on my diet because I am a hard gainer! I am trying to eat almost every three hours and also whey shakes in there too.. I could really use some advice on diet though because I am having trouble forcing myself to eat! Thanks so much everyone! Let me know if you want the pictures/videos!

Chill a bit and enjoy the ride. I'm not making any judgments on you because I don't know you but I've seen dozens of guys burn themselves out in a few months and they never come back. You have to find a balance that allows you to still have a social life and other important things in your life. "Dedicating your life" to martial arts after only a few months of training is always a sign of trouble. I've rarely seen this work out well. Oh, find a good gym. The right training partners will do wonders for your game. Besides, the camaraderie and friendships gained in the gym are what keeps you coming back long after the newness wears off. This is a marathon and not a sprint. Good luck!

awesome.. thanks for the advice. I didnt mean im stopping things that I want for this. The reason I dropped my social life is because it was full of alcohol and weed.. I had been trying to do this for about 4 years now.. and my so called "friends" and the partying always stood in the way. Well I moved out of the town I was living in and stopped doing all that, started eating healthy and I just realizing that I can finally dedicate myself to what I have wanted to do for so long.. My brothers were always helping me train. But I was never motivated. Now I am.. and I am looking for a gym now. Thanks for your input!http://www.defend.net/deluxeforums/i...es/biggrin.gif

Id ditch the weights you are doing at the gym, read around on rossboxing.com for some better ideas. You can work it out for yourself there.
I think you are wasting your time and wearing yourself down with what you are doing weights wise.
What i mean by this is that although you will benefit from it, you could spend your time more productively by doing more functional strenth/energy system training.

          good luck

man.. you dont know how glad I am to hear someone say that!! lol I will still use the gym for certain things. But the ross training has always hit a spot for me. I like the conventional way of training. Alot of the stuff he does just looks more natural then in the gym lifting weights. Thanks for the advice.. Was just about to bike up to the gym. Instead I think I will go do some burpees and some kettlebells ! Thanks again!

one of the most important things is the club you train at and your instructor... where are you training at? or are you looking for a place?

is that just kickboxing or mma as well? ideally you want to find a decent mma club that has fighters competing in events... if you cant find that you can also check out boxing, bjj, wrestling and muay thai places although you have to alter it a little for mma...

                    whereabouts are you based?

                        Tap,

Just to drive home the point that has already been made... Chill Out bro.

If you really want to do weights then thats fine but you do not need to spend hours in the gym. What always worked for me is doing lighter weight with much higher reps. I would normally try and hit 30 reps for 3 sets... it sounds crazy but this kind of training with build your muscles endurance and help them last longer for the fight.

Change up your routine, you do not always have to lift weights. There are several body weight routines that you can do that will deliver great results as well.

As far as dieting well, be sure to increase your protein intake (1 gram of protein for every 2lbs of body weight) which it sounds like you are doing that. Eating every 3 hours is good just make sure you are eating the right foods.

Definately find a good gym and a good group of guys to train with...and the most important point of this is to always be humble when training. By this I mean make sure you always keep your ego in check and respect everyone. This way people will want to help you and not hurt you.

Try to find the right mix of stand up and ground work.

                        Train Hard, Train Smart

                        Tim

hehe I dont know what you mean by chill! Im tryin to be chill..

But seriously thanks for the valuable advice! I honestly dont like spending hours in the gym. I dont really like the gym. I would much rather to situps, pushups, and more natural bodyweight things. My brother has just always made me think they were useless. It feels good to hear you all tell me there not! And with all due respect to my brother he is just a weight lifting fanatic and thats why he pressed on me to get there. I always thought they would be better to do different things and for so long I didnt go to a gym at all because I thought I was getting plenty work out roofing 6 days a week! :P

As for my ego in training and being humble, I think that would probably be my strongest point. My dad is the most respectful man alive in my eyes and has always taught me to be humble and give respect whenever it is due. I grew up on whole grains and organic food so I have a natural disgust for unhealthy food.

Thanks again Tim and anything more you can think of please tell me!

Be sure there's some fun, and not just constant hard work, otherwise, you'll burn out fast

oddly enough.. the way I was raised, there is NOTHING more fun then hard work. Took me a long time to realize and I apologized to my dad for not seeing it sooner.
