  • Drill to simulate what it feels like to be ROCKED or Knocked out....

I performed this drill today in my Muay Thai class. The instructor told me this was one of the initiation drills that I had to perform, but supposedly they do this semi-regularly.

The class all stands in a tight knit circle and a padholder, yourself and the instructor stand in the middle. You bend down at the knees and tuck your hands in. The instructor then spins you as fast as he can 20 times. After you are let up, you have to kick thai pads once as hard as you can.

The instructor's reasoning was if your going to go down, hit him hard one last time. The dizziness is supposed to replicate how to feels to be really rocked from a barrage of shots or a single hard hit. Luckily I was the only one able to pull off any kick. The others simply had to sit down after 15 spins or so...too dizzy!

On another note, I just had the beejesus scared outta me. We were all doing leg raises for the abs and the instructor made us hold the position. As we were struggling to hold it after awhile, he walked on all our stomachs and then, for some bizzare reason he picked up a thai pad. He then slowly walked over to me and said in a strained voice "So you said you wanted to be a fighter??"
I gasped "yes" and he suddenly had the MEANEST look of rage and anger in his eyes and WACK! WACK! WACK!, he was beating me in the abs with the pad while screaming "YOU WANT TO BE A FIGHTER??? CAN YOU TAKE IT??? HUH??? HUH??? YOU WANT TO FIGHT???" I simply gasped yes over and over, he wasnt pulling back at all. Then he stopped and said, "You need to learn how to take shots, next time I will use a kali stick"

I am glad that he is pushing me harder though, shows that he cares......right???

How many good fighters have come out of this stable ? That should give you a guide as to how effective his techniques are.

Back in high school, after the hits of all the Kung Fu movies with Bruce Lee and the others, a bunch of us decided to go out and pick a martial art and go study.

One group decided to pick Karate and went to a school that was run by a guy named Howard Jackson. Supposedly a big tournament fighter with lots of trophies.
My friends got beat up by this guy pretty regularly and finally stopped going.
I wonder just how many Martial arts instructors are closet sadists that love to beat up on people.
Sure, you need respect and loyalty but really hurting someone doesn't instill this and instead may lead to frustration, anger and street violence.

I believe that it's great to push your students but there is a line where it's abuse.

I agree. I haven't had a Muay Thai class so I can't really tell.... It's good to push it to the max, and give it your all, but don't be afraid to keep an eye out for training that's just abuse. It doesn't sound like you are hurt or anything, so I guess it's okay. LOL, if he hits you with a damn stick, knife him. Hahaha "can't you take it?"

sorry, I'm kinda a smart ass with the whole "thank you sir may I have another!!" kind of stuff.

            Train hard, but train smart.

            Take care,
            Ryu

In holland at the MT/Kyokoshin dojo's.

We use "shock absorbing" excersizes all the time.
Walking over the stomach. And the punching with gloves. etc. But the way of youre teacher is new to me the spinning move i mean, the rest is normal

Mail me a report of youre class everytime.
I will help you if you want, ofcourse
I think that the way youre teacher does it is not going to help you.

I think the ROSS material is very intressting for you.
Go to mma.com and klick on Q&a TRAINING ENCHANMENT (SP?) the forum of scott sonnon.
There where some post about "taking blows"
I think some of his tape can help you if you want to learn how to take blows.

That would have been funny if I had been the one going through your drill. Probably during the 5th spin, I would have projectile vomited, effectively splattering the faces of everyone in the close-knit circle as I completed the spin...

Are you familar with a home gym device that has a handle at either end with a strong coiled spring through the center? This device is meant to be held and bent into an arch shape to build upper body strength.

At my school we bend this device as far as we can, then we let one end go and it springs up and smashes us under the chin. We find that this simulates an upper cut
very well and conditions the mind and body to taking a shot.

Rock Ape, just 6 years ago, my gym was very strong, but since the Ontario gov't is starting to bend down on Muay thai and kickboxing, its been getting worse. The instruction however is just as good. The instructor himself competed within Canada. Seems to me that most people take classes only for a little while then move on to personal trainning with the instructor while coming in by themselves. There are alot of good people who come in but dont join in the class. Lot of them spar and hit the heavy bag among themselves and come in other times for the privates.

Ryu, dont worry, I like it!

Thanks for the offered help duch, I think I will take you up on that.

                          Shimora, LOL

Maxximus, is it a hard gym??

I'm curios about something myself. I performed this drill today in class. The instructor told me this was one of the initiation drills that I had to perform.

The class all stands in a tight knit circle. You, wearing a blindfold, stand in the middle with the instructor . You kneel in front of the instructor. The instructor then performs what he calls an "inner-tracheal obstruction choke" on you to "test your resilience to oxygen deprivation." You have to bob your head up and down as fast as you can 20 times. After you are let up, you have to say "Shelly sells sea shells by the sea shore" three times as fast as you can. My instructor says I'm not saying it fast enough and he keeps making me do it over again. He says I might have to start staying after class for some private lessons.
Do you guys find anything unusual about this?

That sounds kind of harsh. With stomach exercises, after we've done leg raises and crunches, the instructor drops a medicine ball on our stomachs while standing directly over us. This is intensified by "pushing" the ball at a higher speed. Every once in awhile I turn from side to side so the ball hits the obliques. This is a tuff exercise. One guy last week had to quit after one drop of the ball on his stomach.
