I performed this drill today in my Muay Thai class. The instructor told me this was one of the initiation drills that I had to perform, but supposedly they do this semi-regularly.
The class all stands in a tight knit circle and a padholder, yourself and the instructor stand in the middle. You bend down at the knees and tuck your hands in. The instructor then spins you as fast as he can 20 times. After you are let up, you have to kick thai pads once as hard as you can.
The instructor's reasoning was if your going to go down, hit him hard one last time. The dizziness is supposed to replicate how to feels to be really rocked from a barrage of shots or a single hard hit. Luckily I was the only one able to pull off any kick. The others simply had to sit down after 15 spins or so...too dizzy!
On another note, I just had the beejesus scared outta me. We were all doing leg raises for the abs and the instructor made us hold the position. As we were struggling to hold it after awhile, he walked on all our stomachs and then, for some bizzare reason he picked up a thai pad. He then slowly walked over to me and said in a strained voice "So you said you wanted to be a fighter??"
I gasped "yes" and he suddenly had the MEANEST look of rage and anger in his eyes and WACK! WACK! WACK!, he was beating me in the abs with the pad while screaming "YOU WANT TO BE A FIGHTER??? CAN YOU TAKE IT??? HUH??? HUH??? YOU WANT TO FIGHT???" I simply gasped yes over and over, he wasnt pulling back at all. Then he stopped and said, "You need to learn how to take shots, next time I will use a kali stick"
I am glad that he is pushing me harder though, shows that he cares......right???
