BJJ Black Belt

I think the average to get you BB is 10 years. Does this strike anyone else as a bit much? Don't get me wrong I'm glad BJJ is not like arts were you're a BB in 2 years. But c'mon we aren't studying rocket science here. You can have your MBA in 6 add Law school and be done
in 8. As a body of knowledge, understanding the principals and becoming effective with them is not a 10 year process.

unlike other arts, in BJJ you need to be able to back up your claim as a black belt. you're not going to get a black belt in 10 years if you're not able to handle yourself. but...if you excel and can prove yourself, you'll get it much sooner. take a look at BJ Penn for example...

Vortex I agree a BB should be able to handle themselves, and I appreciate the standards of BJJ being higher than most other arts. However I think saying it takes 10 years to be truly proficient in it is wrong. Maybe I'm wrong but I thought a BB, same as a Masters Degree, was supposed to indicate that you simply have a full understanding of the principles of a discipline and can apply them when it counts.

i don't think 10 yrs is that bad, jiu-jitsu is something you have to live and breath in order to truly excel...if you try and get a black belt from one of the gracies, be prepared for it to take even longer than that.

q - as vortex said, that's just a rough gauge. it's really dependant on personal ability and dedication. as he mentioned, look at bj penn... he got his in 4 years, and he's a SOLID and proven BB. yes, he may be the exception, but he still proves that it's possible.

So what if "10 years" may be the average time- in most cases, you are judged by ability, not time invested. What you are saying is like complaining about children babies not learning to walk in a day; shouldn't it take only a few minutes? Often, the only thing holding you back is yourself. You may be a slow learner, or a quick one. They won't give you an MBA if you don't know the material; likewise BJJ is similar in that they won't give you one if you don't know it, and aren't able to use it the way it should. 10 years may be the average allotment of time it takes for a person to become sufficiently proficient in bjj to earn a black belt, but not a prerequisite. No one made any rules about a time prerequisite for rank (well... maybe a few people have, but not the majority, I don't think)

But.........there are many dudes that will never get their black belt, get that MBA, graduate college, graduate high school...etc.

it's a matter of desire.....some intelligence, skill and luck.

Getting a Black Belt in GJJ/BJJ is like taking a journey. How quick you get there depends on how fast you go and how often you stop along the way. When some guys stop, they just never get back in. Others take their time and eventually get there. Some, like BJ, just blow right on through.
