I've seen his books in the Paladin Presss catalogs.Are they any good ? Whats his background?

I'm reading one right now: Ending Violence Quickly.
It's pretty good stuff, if simple. Better for the mental stuff than necessarily the "techniques." He's a pretty funny guy. I can't say I've disagreed with anything he's written.
The basic thrust of this book--and a bunch of the others--is talking about what will and will not work in the street or bar, and how to spot/sense typical attack preparations that most people miss.

Animal is my hero!
I can't speak too high of Marc McYoung. Back in unsuspected times, when the term streetfighting wasn't used, good 'ol animal really taught us what is fighting in the streets. If you are seeking moves or techniques, Mcyoung is only fair at that, what it really shine doing is teaching CONCEPTS.
In his books he related, with a rare and marvelous dark humor, about witnesses, mass attacks. weapons, bad asses, and a plethora of other things that only a man grown on mean streets can know. If you judge the man only by his moves and techniques, he's at novice level, but when he discusses the intricacies of the behaviour you must have on the streets, his words are gold. Back in the very early 90s he put in my training a very strong reality check.
I think that I was the first italian to buy his books.
My preferred is his first: "Cheap shots, ambushes and other lessons". His subsequents books are more or less a better explaination of what he teaches on his first.
Also check his books about knife fighting and improvised weapons.

Summing it up I think he has the most honest approach on self-defense, in the business.

Check him out, he has a way of cutting through the crap and getting to the bare bones of fighting. His books really hit it off with me when I started reading them a few years ago.
Made me think of some mistakes in my youth I had made.
