If the RULES define the game?

Little has changed but the names of things...

New name, same game. MMA is just the latest spin on Judo (to me). Randori with striking!(atemi) Tapping out was a rule from Kano jujutsu tournament rules...Symbolic "death"...

I've been waiting for this since the late 1970's...

Yay for Ultimate fighting, NHB...MMA Whatever you like to call it? Vale Tudo, K-1 Pride etc.

The combat sport is one of my favorite games...I don't consider myself a "FAN" but it's fun to watch.

Like boxing with kicking and grappling and throwing and finishing holds...Sweet!

    • ...I just thought this clip may be an interesting and pertinent case study...obviously it's still not a real fight, but it's world-class mma in a different setting. I like see MMA taken out of the octagon and put in backyards and concrete sidewalks...with tiki torches.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

**** Dana White's commentary...this is a better show of athleticism and real world application.

Chances are good that it will be highly unauthorized and fairly brutal but the flavor of H2H will vary from Judo to silat.

When I play that we called it "therapy" among other things. Seriously ramped up randori, CQC or whatever they call it now days.
I'm meeting lots of folks who study MAs in the Navy and Marines, from a lot of different backgrounds. Safety, believe it or not, is are biggest concern.

        I'm stoked!

Thai fighters were good sports for the most part, respected but not revered or feared.
Kali on the other hand... Stick fighters could be a real pain.

Once, when I went to Cebu...

        ahhh, nevermind.

        Enjoy your adventure buddy!
        Thanks, Tant!

        • of course MMA isnt designed for a street situation but if adapted right it can be more effective than anything else imo

          • That's okay, I got a can of whoop ass ready to give to someone that gives me reason to.

            • MMA applys the three elements of combat, STAND UP, TAKE DOWN, and GROUND. Take away the rules and you have one deadly martial art!

              • THE THREE ELEMENTS OF COMBAT: STAND UP, TAKE DOWN, and GROUND. Not all martial arts are complete. Most have two of the three elements.(example) traditional karate only has two, STAND UP and TAKE DOWN. Judo only has two, TAKE DOWN and GROUND. But when you start combining the two, karate and judo into one art you have all three elements to be a complete art. MMA is becoming that art.

                • MMA is missing weapons (not that I want to get this whole thing going again), and watching the last Ultimate Fighter and the spread leg "sprawl" it once again was obvious that protecting the groin is ignored.

But YES MMA does make up a great skill set with a high conditioning level that will allow those that practice it to do well at defending themselves.

                    A) how would YOU defend the takedown without using sprawls?
B)how would you attack someone's groin when they're fully sprawled on top of you?

                    Comment

                    • A misunderstanding - I'm not suggesting the sprawl is not a viable defense, just that the particular fight I was talking about the person defending was against the cage and spread his legs to almost the full splits to maintain control.

                      • SHAWN, MMA does have weapons traing. You just have to add it in, if that's what you want. MMA stands for mixed martial arts not UFC. JKD is also a mixed art, right? Just remember the three elements: STAND UP, TAKE DOWN, and GROUND when looking for that perfect art!

                        • If killing my attacker is what it takes to survive, then I will do so with utmost efficiency.
Screw styles, rules, boundaries, honor, blah blah blah. Deadliness and lethality are dormant in our bodies until we unleash those attributes upon another human being.

My OPINION is (although very broad)

Do what it takes to get what you want. Make sure what you want is what you want. Do not purposefully inflict the wrath of the righteous. When you become an enemy of good, it makes you evil. Have mercy upon those you could destroy, unless mercy is denied from those who are too wicked. Finally, question your own judgement. I question mine as I write this.

All of the "arts" stand up just fine, it is only a matter of what you are willing to do to achieve your goal(s).

                          • There is a counter strike to everything. Conditioning of yourself is important.

Sacrificing strength for flexibility is a mistake, they are both important.

While pinned to the ground, with an attackers knees on my elbow as he brutally punched me in the face, I brought my legs up, wrapped them around his neck, pushed him back, got on top of him, then I poked him in the eyes.

I could have broken his neck very easily.
