hey im new to this forum and i only realy joined to get some advice on how to train to become a better fighter and more able to defend myself.

i have had no formal training what so ever but i have been a magnet for trouble for all my life. ive had to fight folk with allsorts of weapons excluding guns fortunately. i have grown to agree with the general rule that if you can walk away then do but i have had so much trouble that i often havnt been able to.

so what type of martial arts should i look to learn? i want to be able to dissarm and immobilise folk. i aint interested in fighting for sport or for prize just wanna be harder for my own peice of mind.

thanks and i dnt wanna hear im a wimp or any shit like that. if you think that its because your an ametuer you havnt been in a real fight yet.

    Welcme...

There are any number of *things* you can do to develop the attributes you're looking for.

A good boxing or kick boxing gym would make a good start.

The first thing you should do is study the rules of capitalization in standard English writing.

If you are interested in learning to defend against or use weapons you should consider a kali/arnis/escrima or other Filipino martial arts program. I'm a bit biased, but a good choice for you might be a JKD Concepts school with a well-rounded curriculum that includes not just weapons training but kickboxing and grappling instruction as well. Even if you are studying martial arts solely for self-defense, you will want a broad base of training in all ranges of combat so that your stance, movement, punching and kicking mechanics, defensive skills, etc, will all be effective.

As you probably realize, disarms are often very risky even for highly trained practitioners, as a weapon is generally a great equalizer even in the hands of someone completely unskilled. A friend of mine told me that at his school students would be asked to put on old clothes and then "knife-spar" with magic markers. Needless to say, by the end of the sparring session everyone was covered in black ink...

DVDs and books can be a helpful supplement to your training, but they are no substitute for qualified instruction, drill, and live sparring. If you list your location in your profile, other members of the board may be able to help you pick a school. Good luck!

                dvd/vhs recommendations

                1. Paul Vunak's street safe system

                2. Chris Clugston's Comhrac Bas (sp?) and/or combat jkd.

                3. Mike Goldbach's Combat Thai Kickboxing

Your main empty hand tools are the str8 palm to the face, roundhouse/hooking palm to the eardrum, groin hammerfist, thai leg kick, thai push kick, elbow, knee, headbutt, up (field goal) groin kick... Eye pokes can be effective but can also break your fingers, so don't worry about them until you are more advanced.

For disarms, a VERY tough subject, I recommend Punong Guro Edgar Silute's Lameco Eskrima system. I have also heard good things about
(Vee Arnis Jitsu) Shihan David James's disarm material, but I have not gotten to review it myself.

If you have attracted trouble all of your life, including guys trying to stab you and fighting folk with all kinds of weapons, then you must provoke or invite violence.

People don't just get into lots of fights and face weapons all the time because they are "unlucky", I've been around long enough not to buy that. Your problem doesn't have anything to do with martial arts, this is to do with your lifestyle choices.

Take a good look at where you are, who you associate with, where and how you spend your time, and how you act towards other people. Sooner or later you will meet someone who actually knows how to use a knife, disarms or no disarms.

nah the only folk i have had trouble with a right little scallys. the two times i have had folk try to stab me where.

when a guy robbed my house with his freind and awoke me. i wound up fighting him in the corner whilst his bird where kicking and his mate where slamming a golf club in to me head.(the golf club eventually snapped haha) i eventually pushed the knife from his hand which i had a good hold of curled up and stabbed what i thaught where his bely but turns out i caught his missus's leg. the blade snapped and i where left with a wee square of metal. i scraped **** out his face and neck leaving a few nasty scars i beleive but enough to scramble away.

when a couple of guys came round to a hostel i lived in to do in one of the residents. i answered the door and told em to go to ****. the guy nearest went for me with a knife but i had my foot behind the door and trapped the little cunts hand in it.

and otherwise its trouble finding me up the town. i honestly do nothing to invite it and not dealing with it in the past has made things worse in giving others the idea they can bully me.

                          A) Move to a safer location.

                          B) Take up track and field.

                          C) Take up a base martial art before you even branch off, I suggest Boxing or Wrestling.

For self defense the best arts to learn in my opinion are Muay Boran, Modern Arnis and GJJ.
