Ronin's last post got me thinking. Are there any arts that are totaly useless? I have seen some laughable women's self defense stuff that would never work and I have also seen some Kung Fu stuff that would only work in movies... Anyone have any thoughts?

No art will work if you're a weenie...
In a case, a woman who learns how to pull her mase out of her purse fast enough in her Women's Self-Defense class can **** up a weenie who has no take downs trying to rape her who has 10 years of BJJ experience.

What about the pressure point system that's always advertised in the magazines. I realize that there are pressure points on the body and if someone was to hit me in the way the do in the videos, I'd probably be stunned.
But you have to be standing still and voluntarily let the guy hit you. I dont see how it would work as any kind of viable self dense system unless you knew somone was going to attack you and you launched a preemptive attack while they were not paying attention to you. But then, that wouldnt be self defense.

pressure points
Do any of you guys think that pressure points are useful in martial arts at all. I don't know enough to tell whether that whole area is pretty well B.S. or not. It sounds like you may be able to inflict alot of pain with them, but how effective can that be if it is only very temporary pain, and would not end a fight. Again I don't know enough about this area to really make an educated comment. Maybe if you had a guy in a hold, in which you were continually pressing on a pressure point (in that hold) it may be enough to make him submit? I don't know. The reason why I'm skeptical about them (pressure points, when I've heard them mentioned other places) is because I've never really heard of pressure points being mentioned in an NHB setting, maybe I'm wrong and they are used very infrequently, I don't know.

Don't let your eyes fool you
I've seen some Capoeira practioners that were just NASTY. It looks crazy, I know. I dabble in it because I like to keep an open mind, but I can't put much time into training in it because of a chronic back problem. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE SOMEONE WHO TRAINS IN THIS SYSTEM. I've tried to spar the guy who teaches the Capoeira class at our school and it's very "different" to say the least. It's takes a little while to find your timing and rhythm. It can throw you out of your game a little.

Pressure points

Pressure points are extremely effective if you are trained properly. To obtain mastery of this art you must take a steaming hot wok and fill it with gravel. Repeatedly driving your hands into the gravel for about 20+ years, while in the horse stance. Yellining something to the effect of "qui-yah" will help too. In time each of your digits will become hard as steal. At this point you can drive your fingers through any pressure point on the body.

I think of it this way...
Martial "Arts" are just a collection of techniques, training methods, and strategies.
If your "Art" teaches ineffective techniques, outdated training methods, and poor or inappropriate strategies, sooner or later you are going to get your ass kicked, be it in an arena or on the street.
However, people are different. Some people can't perform good techniques effectively. Others are so athletic that they can make "bad" techniques work!
So, if you get in a fight, and you win easily, your "art" worked. If you won, but took a beating, your "art" needs work. If you lose, and survive, get a different instructor, or buy a gun.
It's all about you...some people just weren't meant to fight. Fred Ettish, for example.
I'll bet Fred is packing heat these days.

Hey Miyagi,
Who hasn't beat up Bitteti? I would still fight ten capoeira in a row than one qualified boxer!

I would like to say that every art offers something of value, but I keep thinking of the one UFC that played that video montage on SAFTA.
What did that stand for again? Scientific American Fighting something something? Remeber that guy? I look at him and I think "Yes. This man looks like a scientist."
