  • What are the best schools in L.A.?

I'll be moving out to Los Angeles soon, more specifically in the Hollywood area, and I'm wondering what are the closest and best BJJ schools in the area (and a price range idea). Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

THere is Dartanian Bagby (sp?) near North Hollywood.

The Machados are in Tarzana (Jean-Jaque) and Pasadena (Rigan, Paulo Guillobel and others).

Of course there are many good schools in LA area

But those are the closest I can think of

    Good Luck

Depends on which side of HollyWeird you are going to be at, if it's near the West side, then I would highly recommend Beverly Hills Jiu Jitsu.

No, It's not in Beverly Hills anymore.
It's weird, on Robertson Blvd. on the west side of the street, that's the border for Beverly Hills, but the school moved over, across the street to a smaller, but less expensive place and that is Los Angeles.

      if you want more info:

Beverly Hills Jiu Jitsu Club is the Best Martial Arts School in Los Angeles for Kids & Adults to Build Focus, Confidence, Have Fun, and Get Fit.

If you are on the East side of HollyWeird, then, I feel sorry for you.
the neighborhoods are pretty bad. Instead of going to a gym, you just need to walk around, later at night for some training, but wear a Kevlar vest......Heh heh.

Oh, it's not that bad.......Heh heh.

but the neighborhood ain't that great.
If you want some other training in the heart of Hollyweird, on Sunset Blvd near Western is Gokor's Sambo/Judo studio that Gene Le Belle also teaches out of.
I believe it was last year that I was watching TV and saw there was a shooting at a store in a mini mall and recognized it as the mall that Gokor's school was located at. Typical for that neighborhood, shootings weekly or almost a daily occurance. Lots of drugs, prostitution, and ever other vice you can think of is there.

Dudes are always asking what the best BJJ school is, in Los Angeles.
You can be a scrub and go to every school and take their first free introductory lesson and then decide which school is best for you.

The best school is just the one that appeals to what you expect from a school.
You can go to the big names, Rickson, Torrance and the Machados, but there are many, many other black belts around in the area.
There are also many brown and purples around too that are starving and wouldn't mind giving some private lessons pretty cheap.

I was going to the bathroom in an Italian restaurant and one guy that was working the kitchen stopped me and asked me if I did BJJ. (I was wearing a red nose t-shirt and was on my way to the Rickson tournament at UCLA and had stopped for some lunch) Turns out the guy is a BJJ brown belt. He recently got promoted to black.

You just never know where you will run into a BJJ athlete here in LA.
