  • Is BJJ enough for the streets?

    Tell me your opinion!

Yes it is. Most arts are enough for the street as best as an art can be for an unarmed individual. I'm a decent law abiding citizen as are all my friends and none of us has ever had any reason whatsoever to fight on the street, in a bar, or anywhere else. I read about some of the people on this forum and many more at the UG, and it makes me wonder what kind of troublemakers some people are. Even one streetfight is unlikely if you are a mature adult, more than one and it's definitely you. By the way, I've been in every kind of neighborhood in many different countries and have never had a fight anywhere. I've only had one occasion that could have turned into a fight and I walked away. Honestly, who the hell really trains for self defense anyway? I do it for the fun of the sport.

As a training method, I wouldn't say it is enough for the street. A street fight has infinite variables, I don't think any art in and of itself is complete enough for the street. However, I do think it is possible for a person to only train one art and still be a good street fighter. It depends more on the individual of course. However, academically speaking - no singular art is enough for the street.

I'm always kind of suprised at the number of street fights people seem to get into on these forums. (Knock on wood) I have not been in a street fight since I was about 13. After high school, I never even came close. Over the years, I suppose I've put up with some rude behavior. But I don't really think street fighting is the answer.

For those of you who are getting in street fights, are you putting your self in harms way? How does this happen?

Americana, that sounds like a good question for a new thread. I think the question here is a little different. I think your question would be interesting to be posted with it's own title...a lot of people might not find it here. (insert anal retentive joke here)

While it isn't enough to fight multiple attackers, its good enough. I'm with Miyagi, I've never been in a fight. However, I doubt I'd lose if I was to get in one

There is no art that is perfect for the street but BJJ/GJJ is the best for the street IMO.

My personal choice for best "street-defense" art would be Muay Thai, followed closely by BJJ.

I suck at both, so I am unbiased.

Muay Thai so you can knock someone down and run, BJJ for when you fail.

NO, but wrestling and jiu jitsu combined IS

Think about it, if you can get takedown and then use jiu-jitsu, you've got it wrapped up tight

Well, the only quams i have with BJJ is that there is a lack of a way to deal with multiple opponents. If you're choking some dude out, whats's keeping his buddy from running up and kicking u in the head?

                            well!

with multiple opponents, your best bet is just RUN!!!!!!!!!!!, unless it's just two Nancy Boys!

Whether its Mua Thai or BJJ,with multiple attackers your chances arent very high at all.
