  • what to do for bear hug?

    Hi,

I'm talking about the kind of bear hug where a guy comes up from behind you and also get your arms in his grip so you can't move them. The only responce to this situation that I've heard so far is to take as deep a breath as you can (to make your rib cage as big as possible) then exhale very quickly. Then, due to the fact that your rib cage will get alot smaller, you will fall to the ground (I guess).

This does not sound all that feasable to me because the guy will just regrip when your rib cage gets smaller when you exhale. Also this is assuming he's got ahold of you over your rib cage, what if the grip is under your rib cage on your stomach?

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

Better to be more aware than that. Don't let a guy sneak up on you in that way. But I guess sometimes it can't be helped.

You can headbutt the guy from behind if he's taller than you. I've done this, and it seems to work well. If you're strong just squat and press your arms upwards to break the hold, slip free, etc.
You can also step with one leg behind him (putting your chest and torso square to the side of his body) and your arms (being pinned) will have access to now grab around his waist and manuevre for a suplex, etc.

The problem is....no one is going to come up, grab you in a bear hug and say "I got you!"

....if someone bear hugs you it means they will suplex you or take you down hard. You don't have time to do cool techniques.

I'd rather push my arms out to create space, and then turn into him to get a better position for my own suplex.

But I'm kinda strong too so I might get away with it easier than a smaller guy, etc.

Headbutt is a good thing. But if he's shorter than you you'll hurt your own head.

.................You can always pull a knife in a clinch
(note: do at your own risk LOL)

You just have to do a couple of foot stomps 2 or 3 then he is gonna watch is feet and then boom a headbutt right on his nose he will be stun or atleast surprise and then you take him down and finish him whit a good old juji and snap! is arm

          Add one more thing.

Everything these other guys have said is correct. If it was me I'd do the above. But as far as the specific technique you described.....

After you inhale to make your chest bigger. Exhale quickly as you drop your weight (it's called "seating") while simultaneously bending your knees. Extend your arms straight out in front of you, this will break the hold. WATCH OUT THOUGH. As soon as you break his grip you are in a bad way because he can get a rear naked choke on you if you watch yourself.

          Hope this helps.

            Great suggestions!

I hadn't thought of foot stomping or kick to the nuts, I like those. Ya if you use your arms also with "seating" I could see that working for sure, when someone had described "seating" to me previously they had only mention the chest thing, that was why I was skeptical, but with arms aswell, ya that would definately work.

Thanks everybody this has been very helpful.

One thing you can do is step around with one of your feet (for example, your left foot steps around behind your opponents right leg). The front of your hips are against his (around the side of his hips), and you place your hands behind his knees (from the front outside of his knees). Lift him and throw him (basically the opposite of the direction you're facing) using your hips as leverage. During the throw he should lose his grip, if he doesn't, go along for the ride and land on him with all your weight. This is a good leverage technique that works well against bigger opponents. I don't know if I explained it very well, ask people you train with if they know this technique and have them show you. It's very effective.

Try this. Deliver a low hammerfist to the groin and step out to 11 oclock to deliver a reverse thrust kick Finish in a cat stance in case he is ready to attacks again.

If you dislocate your shoulder you can slip out of anything... strait jackets prove no problem so human arms will be a piece of piddle....
