Yeah, they want to learn Muay Thai, but only to supplement their MMA and improve their standup, not to become Muay Thai competitors or champs.

Just in the cities or generaly? MT popularity in Holland is getting to new heights now that the countries biggest TV station has started streaming events live on the net. And since it's free, and promoted on the net, it is watched not just here.

how is this possible when boxing title fight purses are in the tens of millions of dollars vs. measly low hundred thousands for MMA?

take a look at a little wacky fight training that doesnt feed the big company machine for a change and is propable the most effecient and practical way of all ( opinion)

Generally, parents dont want there kids to box and kids are not taking it up in the same numbers as they used to in Thailand, its fair to say that in the provinces where needs must then kids are still boxing to earn money, but in general overall there is a lack of interest in Muay Thai in Thailand.

Just thought I'd chime in - I'm one of those people that was introduced to Muay Thai through the growing popularity of MMA. I started training in Muay Thai and am completely hooked.

I've found that I keep up a lot more with Muay Thai and K-1 now on a weekly basis than MMA. I still watch the big PPV MMA events, but I don't follow it as closely.

The Contender Asia/Muay Thai is now airing on Versus on Thursday nights, I think that they could show more of the training and less of the "challenges," but I think it will be good exposure to the masses of what Muay Thai is really like on its own, as opposed to most people learning Muay Thai now only in the context of its application in MMA.

Its also very unfortunate about what is happening to Muay Thai in Thailand. Its just yet another developing asian country losing touch with its roots. On the other hand, K1 is big $$$ in Japan, so at least that is still there to inspire up and coming fighters.

Heh as said before Muay Thai is here way more popular than MMA
but than again MMA isn't popular at all here.

I'd say that Muay Thai, Boxing, Karate, and even Judo are more popular here than MMA. edit: even Wushu is more popular than MMA here but way less popular than MT/Boxing/karate/judo)

Never even heard from MMA untill I started to look on the internets and see everyone boasting that MMA is sooo great.(still have very big doubts about that tbh. Imo it's just an sport like wrestling...
MMA's an crowd pleaser but low efficienty on the streets imo. sure it will do against untrained people but any dude that's Been training Traditional karate/Kung Fu MT are allready just by the looks of it way more effective on the streets.)

Yeah, I'm SURE that anyone trained in traditional karate/kung fu is way more effective on the street...wtf???? Somebody needs to rent and review the early ufc's. How quickly people forget/unlearn past lessons.

Even in the early UFC's where quite some (mostly controlling) technique's from Karate etc NOT allowed aswell as the eye couging.

Having read a range of your bizarre posts, I agree with KOTF's call - I think you're trolling.

In response to the 'eye gouging/jabbing' end-all, be-all cure for the 'anti-grappler', the grappler can do that, too, in addition to hitting the groin, pinching, biting and pulling hair AND he can still grapple. In lieu of all of that, it's probably best for the traditional karate/kung fu guy to know how to sprawl, defend the clinch/takedown and be able to scramble back to his feet if he is taken down. Peace, J~
