  • PPMAC Vale Tudo Results!!

    Hey everyone!
We just hosted the first ever vale tudo event in Colorado Springs on Saturday, and it was a great tournament. We had a good turnout, and as I mentioned in previous posts, there was a title up for grabs sanctioned by the Pike's Peak Martial Arts Council (affiliated with Olympic Karate and Wrestling, as well as the Amateur Athletic Union). Students from all styles and disciplines showed up to fight, and we even had divisions for kids!! There were six fighters under the age of ten! As far as the adults, here's a quick run down of what happened:

Rodney Moore won three fights by a huge margin, and gave a great showing for his first time in NHB competition. He scored some great submissions and a shoulder throw that would have made Olympic Judo Players ooh and ahh. Rodney is a native of Great Britain, and has only been training for NHB for a few months. He eventually took second place in the Adult Men's Lightweight division, and said that he wants to compete Advanced next time.

Kurt Skarsdedt won the Men's Adult beginner Division. This kid has real potential! He is only 17 years old, and a junior in high school, but he fought on even terms with the adults, and made a terrific showing. Tipping the scales at 194lbs., Kurt fought four bouts within half an hour, against wrestlers, strikers, and NHB stylists. He had some killer takedowns, and showed a lot of fighting spirit. In all honesty, he kicked ass, and even though he's not one of my fighters, he desrved the gold medal that eventually hung around his neck. Keep your eyes open for this kid.

Gary Borum and Bob McCaffery ended up fighting for the Open Adult Advanced Division Title, and in true NHB fashion, it was a David and Goliath match-up. Bob weighed in at an even 160 lbs., and Gary Borum tipped the scales at 215. Still, both fighters were game and ready to go for that shiny title belt. In the opening round, Gary was tentative, and Bob scored several takedowns, but was unable to finish on the floor. Gary landed some good shots, but the round went to Bob for the wealth of double and single leg takedowns he performed. After a one minute break, the fighters met again, and this time, Gary found his groove. He landed some great shots, both standing and on the ground, giving Bob a black eye, and a severely black ear to remember the day by. At about four minutes into the second round, Bob applied a neck crank, and Gary tapped out. He was ahead on the scorecards in that round. So, in the end, Bob McCafferty went home with the title and Vale Tudo Championship. There were a lot more fights, and all were exciting, but there are some of the highlights. Hope to see some of you guys there at the next tournament! And way to go Cutting Edge Team!
