  • Tendonitis

I think I am starting to get tendonitis in my right elbow joint from the years of BJJ, wrestling, Judo, and weight lifting I have done. I guess I will check to see if that is really what it is. Last night in judo I was told it was probably a possibility.
I thought it might just be a sensitive muscle pull that happens in the same place every so often, but tendonitis might be the culprit? Anyone else suffer from this? It's a pretty common thing with grapplers, and other atheletes no?

Now if I did that, where would all the pleasure go??
Geez HD, you're obviously not very good at it. The trick is not to "go" after the first 10 seconds. Give it a whirl.

        Dio, I don't know if it's curable or not...that's why I'm asking.
I think it leads to arthritis later on.

Gargoyle, I didn't expect to see you back here anytime soon!
How are you? Well with the exception of the annoying pains in my arm, I am doing pretty well. I should be getting my brown belt in judo in the next month or so, and I'm continuing to write, and have gotten some copyrights sent to me.

Other than that I'm finishing up my BA degree, and will probably ship off to Japan to teach English in about 2-3 years.
For now that's the plan. Hope things work out.

Are you posting on any other forums? Glad to see you back.

            Take care,
            Ryu

              Ryu,

Tendonitis is characterized by pain during movement without any swelling. If you have swelling it's could be something different and you need to see an orthopedic doctor. You didn't mention swelling, but it does sound like you might have tendonitis. I can't run on a regular basis because I get it in the iliotibial bands in my legs (that band that runs into your knee joint on the outside).

The only thing you can do is rest. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories also may help speed recovery (Advil, Motrin, aspirin), but be careful about taking them too often or you could screw your stomach up. I was told by an orthopedic surgeon that continued exercise would not damage the joint, but it will just continue the inflammation and probably make it worse. It will take months to fully recover. It's a bitch, I know. If you don't want to just quit exercising that arm altogether, take motrin before you roll and ease up on the rolling (both in frequency and intensity). It will probably take longer to fully recover, but it's an alternative to stopping altogether.

                Hey Ryu,
I'm in the same boat as you, my elbow has tendonitis as well. I went to a Physical therapist and she gave me some stretching exercises, a band called and Epi-Lock, and told me to get a referral from my primary care for 4-6 weeks worth of treatments. I did not get the referral yet but the stretching and the band have helped quite a bit. My particular brand of tendonitis is in a muscle group called the pronator teres, it is on the inside aspect of the forearm and had resulted in limited throwing velocity and pain while training sticks and grappling. Primarily the straight arm lock and the kimura seem to offend the arm and cause the most pain. The therapist told me with treatments and reduced usage that I should be much better in 6 weeks or so. I have had this problem for approximately 14-18 months so that should give you an idea on recovery time.

                Good luck,
                Pat

                    Hi guys,
Dammit, that's not what I wanted to hear...sigh

But the pain is there, there is no swelling, and intense rolling and throwing (even arm-wreslting) screws it up... I guess it really is that. Thanks guys for your suggestions. This really sucks though, because I want to continue to roll...but tonight I'll tone down the intensity, and maybe just roll with the instructors and spend more time with technical stuff or something.

I have a bad habit of not resting...so if I want to give it rest that means I not only have to take it easy rolling, but also lifting weights, doing push-ups, etc etc. I'm doing SOMETHING everyday...

Well I'll probably see a doctor then. Thanks for the replies guys.

                    Ryu

I'm doing just fine... 'cept my lower back is in excruciating pain (pulled muscle).

I stayed home from work today, because sitting really messes it up.

Looks like it's me and uncle flexoral today ;-)

Daughter's growing like a weed...six years old and counting!

I'm posting as Rastus on the Otherground, and occasionally on the boxing forum. Check out their archives, and you'll see a couple of my posts.

                      Take care, buddy...
