  • How to live with the pain of training?

    I usually train bjj a couple times a week. I lift and do some running on the side. My training is nowhere near as rigorous as a pro fighter or many of the enthusiasts across the country. I have found the daily physical aches and pains of training to be unbearable at times. Sore neck (from trying to escape a crank), sore shoulders, sore elbows, sore hands, aching knees, tender ankles, messed up back, bruises everywhere, sore muscles, the pain is something I've had to live with. Don't any of you ever suffer this? Sometimes it's a healthy amount but sometimes things get way out of hand.

    I have had sprained necks, pulled muscles, deep bruises, torn ligaments in my left elbow, tendonitis possibly forming in my right elbow, and my back and neck are constantly in need of stretching, and pop often....and I'm only in my 20's.

    Vacations help some, but most of us are just addicted to training.
    If you are in pain though, and it's getting in the way of you enjoying your life, you might want to take a break from training all together. You sound like you train kind of like I do. I am doing something just about every day whether it be cardio, weights, judo, drills, randori, etc.

      Change your game and the way you practice.If you are having to escape neck cranks alot,you should tap as soon as you get one put on you.Dont try to escape it.Save your neck.You only have one.Instead,work on not being put in that position.If someone gets it,tap right away.You need to know how to escape if you have to.But it is best to know where you are at all times so you dont get in that position in the first place.
      If you were constantly getting put in a triangle,would'nt you try to figure out why you keep getting caught and change what you are doing wrong?Same thing.You need to work on not being in that position.Which means tapping and trying it again.Save your neck and work on position.Make it a habit when training to make position #1.He gets your neck,tap.You already did something major wrong for him to get you in that position.Tap and start over. I have tapped to neck cranks that I could have endured and escaped from many times.But,I feel I let myself get put in that position.So,rather than risk possable injury,admit you messed up and tap.Everytime you tap you should be evealuating what you did wrong to be in that position in the first place.A guy can know more submissions than you ,but if you keep good position,it makes it very hard to apply them.

        When I was rolling, my feet were constantly messed up. I had these little sores on my feet from holding the guard and busted my toe twice. Damn I miss BJJ!!!

          There's probably two ways to deal with the pain, and I wish I could be using both these methods.

          Drugs (Illegal or Prescription) and sex. Music and vacations help too but you can't go on vacation everytime your ankle hurts.

          I get bruises up and down my legs, cuts and crap all over my feet, all the skin underneath my fingernails is cut up thanks to my friends double weave atama, my right elbow has been hurting me for a month and a half and as soon as it stopped hurting, yesterday my instructor blitzes my arm and puts on a really hard arm bar that has put my arm back in the same position as before. I guess shit happens when you train for BJJ, but I got to admit not only is it worth it, I don't really mind the bruises and stuff.

            Sex when you're injured?? I don't know what kind of wimpy sex you are having, but the last thing I'd want to do with a sprained neck, bruised ribs, or torn muscles is jump in the sack...yikes.

            though perhaps I just put more energy in it

            (disclaimer, this post is about as "boarish" as Ryu gets. Hope no offense comes to any women who read it.)

                In Thai, bruised shins is something that always seems to happen. Headaches after sparring also always occurs along with sore jaws and chins. Liver shots from kicks really hurt like a mother!

                  Bobby that barely makes sense.
                  Masturbation is not half way as energetic as sexual intercorse is. I appreciate the effort you're putting into trying to make a joke, but it seems to show you've never really had sex at all.
                  If you had then you'd probably think before posting something as "virgin" as you did.

                    The funny thing about these day to day pains is that they always appear the morning after the grappling class, there is no sign of what pain I will have the night before. Wierd how a good night's sleep is like the gateway to pain.

                        I'm with you Mr. Miyagi.

                        After a really intense class I have a hard time getting to sleep.

                        Class is out at 9. I'm home by 9:30, in bed by 10:30, have to get up at 6:30 to be at work at 8.

                        Sometimes I lay there till 1:00 or 2:00 am thinking about moves, situations, and ways to improve. My mind is so revved up I can't sleep.

                        It makes getting out of bed that much harder. This morning I hit the snooze button till 7:15 and didn't get to work until 8:30.

                            Ryu, I train bjj usually 2x a week. I lift weights 3x a week. On a nice day if my legs are feeling ok then I run/bike/roller blade. Any bjj class makes me sore as hell the next morning, not to mention John Bennett's point of having to deal with a huge blood sugar high that won't let you sleep. Lifting soreness is something I've gotten used to but if I do very high weights (less than 6 reps) then there will also be hell to pay the next morning. Most cardio stuff is fine but if I run on pavement for too long then my knees feel terrible and I feel like I might get shin splints. I'm sure all of you that train have had mornings where some area of your body hurt so badly you thought you'd have trouble making it through the day. I have found that upper body soreness goes away quickly but problems with knees, ankles, and feet can linger for much longer, probably because we are constantly walking around aggravating the tender spots there. No jokes about tender spots please.

                              You basically have the same kind of training schedule that I do.
                              I agree the pains are annoying. I remember once waking up in the morning after a hard workout, and felt fine until I stretched my arms over my head. My neck cramped up, and all the sore muscles and a sprained toe all hit at the same time.
