  • Why does music today suck?

I know many of you listen to the trash mainstream America calls music, but to those that agree w/ me; just what exactly happened somwhere in the 70s that made Rock/Pop/Everything so God damn sucky?

I say it was a combination of Punk and Disco that ruined today's music. When was the last time you heard a good guitar solo or an actually original riff in a rock song? Or a pop song that didn't make you want to spew your lunch (or load, depending on whose in the video) whenever it came on?

Jeez, I'm 19 years old and I act like a bitter old man about music. Long live the Stones!

Little grade school kids trying to act older. I hate it Its sad when you have to resort to listening to old music again. Especially when your only 17 years old.

To many hip hop idiots and/or primates, or even worse hip hop type wannabees, (ie. Kid Rock) with absolutely no talent what so ever, very sad. I have never seen such a sad collection sh*t music in my life.

This is a very funny trend, some of guys I know listening to old stuff from the 80's that we grew up on (AC/DC, etc, and no I'm not kidding, this has been my experience).

The music now a days is just s*it.

I listen to rap, but none of the new sh!t. Public Enemy, Jurassic 5, Mighty Souls of Mischief, Common and rawkus are the artists I listen to. That Cash Money and Bad Boy stuff is lame as hell and displays nothing but trash and it has no artistic merit.

Right on Yella, I'm a hip hop head too. But I noticed as I got older and older, my love for rock and roll grew. Just a month ago I was at a music festival where I saw Aceyalone, Gangstarr, Souls of Mischief, Del, and the greatest hip hop band (you read that right guys, band) ever, the Roots.

My exposure to rock and roll has only been through all the videos that sherdog.com has. LOL

I have to admit, even though I don't have a taste for rock at all, it is the best fight music.

I am 20 years old and hate new day crap. I really don't know why the music of today sucks so much. Maybe they just don't have that psychedelic edge like Pink Floyd or the Grateful Dead.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying all of today's music is good, but to me at least, its no different now than it was 40 years ago-there's just more variety. I hate people that say "mainstream music sucks" just to look cool, as if only small time bands make good music, until they make it big, then they apparently suck because they made it big and are now mainstream. Yeah, they suck, thats why they sell so many albums. Music being "good" is dictated by OPINION, everyone's got one. Your opinion alone does not define quality music as a whole. Personally, I like all kinds of music, (except country... to ME, it sucks, but to someone else it may be their bread and butter, and thats fine by me) and think there is both good and bad stuff from past and present. But I don't sellout and start saying XXX band sucks just because they hit the paydirt and want to look cool by criticizing mainstream music trying to make myself look different or bolder; to me thats just gay.

Radiohead, Bjork, Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, Fiona Apple, etc. are all great and modern.

                    I agree with Patterson

There are a lot of good modern music out there. IOt isn't mainstream though.

There's a reason why no one still uses guitar solos much anymore. IT'S BEEN DONE! Popular music has changed becuase everyone gets tired of hearing the same damn thing all the time. I like AC/DC sometimes myself, but you *HAVE* to admit that all of their songs sound exactly the same. Why is there such a backlash against mainstream and new music?? That just seems to be the new trend. Some of it is good, some of it sucks, as it always has.

There is no NEW backlash against mainstream music, its been like this forever. Since yes, my beloved 60s.

However, you're telling me that classic rock all sounds the same and thats the reason they stopped doing guitar solos?! Because todays music all sounds different.

As far as today having good bands, obviously there are still some that have skills. Most of these bands you mention are good because they still are still creative after they became mainstream unlike most bands that blow up and then just sit around making accessible music to make money off of. Radiohead, Bjork, and NIN are obviously great bands of today. The Roots, Nirvana, Pearl Jam (lets just say some of the more popular alternative bands), Red Hot Chili Peppers and Phish are some more great ninties bands. Don't get me wrong, our generation isn't that awful; but it just seems like our music gets worse and worse everyday.

And Dire Wolf, I wonder why it took me that long to realize you were a Deadhead?

Guitar solos are out? Ever listen to Metallica? Or any other band that actually plays their own instruments? The bands, that endure are the ones that play their own music. The only exceptions are solo singers. Otherwise the sugar coated pap that is put out by anyone who has a drum machine and can afford to pay studio musicians is only popular for so long, and that is because music studios know that if they can promote the latest boy or girl group they'll make millions. I don't know about you, but I or anyone I know never requested and N-Sync song. Recording studios pay to have maximum air-time for the latest money-making scheme. And people fall for it by purchasing every last album on the shelves. "Wow, these guys must be good! Their song is on the radio five times every hour! I've got to get this album!" Same goes for rock, hip-hop, blues or whatever.

Sorry for going on about something that is off-topic, but the state of popular music never fails to make me see red.

                            I agree with Biker.

Many people are listening to old Rock because they can not relate with today's techno crap and Destiny's Child garbage, and because todays music just plain bites.

I happen to like Creed. Also really enjoy Metallica (well OK they aren't new). It all depends on your mood. Powerman is fine and then there are Van Halen and AC/DC days. I did just see Eric Clapton in concert - now that was AWESOME!
