Many people (including me) are very pissed with Metallica because of the whole Napster thing. Anybody else notice that, a lot of long time Metalica fans probably won't every look at them the same way. Just my observation.

I don't think its really the Napster thing. They've just been different for a while now and people just want more and more reasons to get pissed at them. I just see them as older and not as cool as they used to be when they were younger

Actually your probably right Hookah, I think their "new look" & "new sound" lost them a lot of fans.

Re: Why does music today suck?

The problem with mainstream music today is that listeners don't determine what they get to listen to. As far as radio and video goes you are forced to take in whatever the radio stations and MTV decide on a whim to tell you is cool. Unfotuneately what they determine will be 'cool' is the same tired overdone garbage that was successful a few years ago, and continues to be so becuase their major audiences are impressionable middle schoolers and high schoolers that can be easily brainwashed into liking what they are told to like.
Even further beyond this is the fact that most popular music is very very simple in structure and low in the level of skill required to write and or play it. I read someones theory that the simplest music is the most popular because most people don't have very developed areas of the brain dealing with sound processing and can't tell apart many sounds at once, such as multi layered and textured music.
I would say that the record companies, radio stations, and MTV all know that most people are incapable of really telling the difference between a wide variety of sounds at once and intentionally keep the main-stream music dumbed down in order to make money. This is why they keep far far away from anyone with any talent.
I recently got into an argument with my friends irritating and stupid girlfriend about music. I was asked what type of music i like (classical and heavy stuff in general) and was told that 'that is not music' Beethoven is not music? Andres Segovia is not music? WTF? She went on to blabber about how country music is the highest from of music and has the best musicians and writers. I asked her for some credentials of some popular country performers and what made them good musicians and she came up with nothin better than 'they can play the guitar real good.' I told her that if that is the only standard by which to measure how good a musician someone is the music i listen to shits all over her beloved country music. Then she demanded credentials, so i produced them. I love black-metal, and if you can get past the vocals the musicianship is outstanding. The majority of these guys have degrees in classical guitar and other instruments such as violin and cello, and are very technically sound musicians. Faced with this she backed down.
Anyways my point is that most of todays music, especially what is popular sucks ass because the companies that peddle it realize that crappy music sells and keep pouring it out for consumption by morons and twelve year old girls. As long as those morons and twelve year old girls have money to spend we will be forced to continue ignoring this crap.

            Metallica/Napster

Metallica kind of got themselves into a lose/lose position re: Napster.

            Why?

On the one hand, they have a point about not allowing people to take artists' music for free. That is the only thing artists have to generate income--their songs--and the idea that anybody can download their album and pay them absolutely nothing is pretty indefensable.

Yet, on the other hand, we've been getting raped by record companies since the beginning of time. Did you know:

-The production cost of CDs has plummeted since their arrival, yet their retail price has gone UP! Remember how people thought CDs were expensive compared to records but were told that the cost would go down?! LOL! Guess that didn't happen. Think about it: CD players, DVD players, MP3 players--their retail price has dropped steadily since their inception. Yet CDs have gone up.

-Know how much CDs actually cost to press, including the booklet? $2. Two dollars. Think about that when you pick up your next Eminem CD "on sale" for $14.99. BTW, do you know how much artists get from CD sales? If they're lucky--and that's a big "if"--they get $1 per. If you're in a band--say, with four guys--you guys all SPLIT that $1.

So let's say you go platinum--1MM copies sold. That's $1MM dollars for you and your 3 bandmates. Split 4 ways, that's $250K. Wholesale, the CDs cost about $10.

Thus, that's $9MM for the record company, $5MM for record retailers (assuming they mark up only $5) and for the guys who actually MADE the record, $250K each.

Oops! That's before the producer gets his cut--probably 5%--and you've paid off the production cost--let's say $500K--and your manager gets his 15%. So after THAT, you get to split with your bandmates $300K. That's $75K apiece, before taxes. I wouldn't buy that Ferarri just yet.

So if the CD wholesales for $10 and costs $2 and the artist gets $1 (and that's pretty high), what's the other $7 for?

Exactly. "Packaging costs." Marketing costs. Whatever they call it.

The record companies rip off you, they rip off the artists you buy... so on that hand it's hard to shed a tear for them when they go after Napster. Remember how they tried to outlaw used CD stores? They tried to legislate that you cannot sell a CD you no longer want, and buy one from somebody who felt the same through a used CD store. Out and out greed.

And, based on my last stop at Virgin records, CD prices have gone up yet AGAIN. They were calling a new CD "on sale" at $16.99, LOL.

                      Hmmm.

Yes, it is true that the record companies are greedy, but they are really doing what any company would do under the same circumstances. It is the job of any company to see exactly how much money they can sqeeze out of a consumer to maximize their own profits. The reason why record companies have continued to raise the prices of CD's is because we have not refused to pay the price. It is our complacency that allows this phenomenon to continue. It is the progressive trend towards a pacifistic society that sedate man's urge to fight whether it be metaphoric or literally. Only when mankind gets his balls back can he ever expect to see some changes, until then we will remain red-faced and tongue bitten. In conclusion, music of today sucks because people of today suck.

Dude, if i ever catch my kids listening to Metallica i'm gonna choke those little bastards out cold, unless of course it is something that predates the 'black' album, but then again radio stations won't even touch their good stuff now. Why would they do it in the future? Metallica didn't change to keep up with their audience, they changed to appeal to a much larger audience at the expense of most of their original fans. But this game is all about money, so you can't really fault them there. Megadeth didn't even try to hang on to a shred of their '80s' image they saw the loads of money metallica was making by pouring out crap for mass consumption and tried to follow suit but the name megadeth is too alienating to a mainstream audience, so the same success did not follow. Desperate for cash , they have returned to their metal roots, but the damage has ben done.

                              New Bon Jovi... ?????

They're getting a lot of airplay here, but then again the 80s hairmetal stuff is popular in SE Asia. Go into any bar in this and you'll hear Europe's "The Final Countdown." People have it as their cell phone ring tone.

What's next? Comebacks by Def Lepard? Motley Crue? Maybe a resurgence of metal (and I mean the good stuff - ok, so I liked those guys in jr high school) is possible.

Man, I used to be able to play everything from Kill em All to Justice (well, not the solos) on guitar. That and the Cult. I miss the Cult. I'm just looking for an excuse to grow my hair long again. But then again, that sucks for grappling. The knee on the hair position is damn annoying.

The Cult is reunited and has a new album coming out!

                                Your prayers have been answered.
