  • What do you wish you'd known before starting out in Martial Arts?

I wish I'd known to try out a bunch of different martial arts before committing to one, and to judge a club on the ability of its students, not its instructors.

What do you wish you could go back in time and tell yourself?

    don't do the kung fu.

Go straight to the combat sports.

Did you gain anything from the kung fu?

I did karate for years, and although I really wish I'd changed martial arts sooner, I'm still glad I met the people I did. My striking is also better because of it.

You can start combat sports with second-hand knowledge that they are more practical than strip-mall "kuhrotty", but there's something to be said about first doing the strip-mall "kuhrotty" and then experiencing first-hand why combat sports are more practical.

I feel I wasted some years messing around with Kenpo. Spent too many years learning "techniques" versus how to fight. I have no regrets learning Wing Chun, still my favorite as far as hands and blocking goes. Not the best for waist down and I still love Silat. But I did spend a couple of years doing Tang So Do (sp), waste of time and about 3 more of Kenpo, againt, major waste. But then again, if I hadn't learned some arts that I didn't like, I might not appreciate those arts that I do now.

Why do people want to learn how to fight? It's easy. Go out on the street, pick on someone angry so they attack you and hey presto you're in a fight. Or you could fight with the police, they will always fight back with you....you might get tasered though.....but you're in a fight and you're learning how to fight because you're in one!

Maybe I am ignorant, and Jubaji will no doubt agree with that, but what do people mean when they say they want to learn how to fight? Under whose rules? What sort of style? What sort of techniques?

I know what I want to learn how to do when I train.....I don't want to learn "how to fight" though......but maybe my goals are different from others?
