I am a resident physician with an interest in Sports Medicine, specifically combat sports. As you know, MMA is one (if not) the fastest international sports to date. I have always had an interest in combat sports and most recently did some ringside work with USA Boxing. Now I am interested in the biomechanics and kinetics of striking and most importantly finding ways to prevent training injuries. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of medical literature out there about combat sports medicine. A lot of it is on concussion which isn't necessarily the most helpful.
I believe that there are certain types of physical injuries that are specific to combat sports. Because there is such a negative stigma attached to combat sports in the medical community, I am concerned that many fighters are being overlooked and worse fighting through injuries that are preventable.
So my question for you is when you get injuries, when do you decide to see a physician?
Are you worried that if you see a physician that they'll find something to shut you down?
If you have gone to the doctor, do you feel like they understand you as a fighter?
If there was such thing (and there might be) as a fighter's clinic, would you go?
I would really appreciate your input...
