I think the main reason now why you dont see other styles in the UFC aprt from Thai, grappling and boxing is because gyms which concentrate on breaking there fighters into UFC/MMA train in these arts. They have been proven to be very effective and work.

Having said that there are still lots of other styles which could be implemented into an MMA training regime which could make the fighters that little bit more less predictable. Lyoto Machida has proved this by implementing karate into his fighting method. Cung Li also with his kicking ability.

Probably the main reason MMA fighters don't enter Sanshou tourneys is that the current popularity of the MA world is the UFC and other similar MMA tourneys.

Kung Fu had its ride during the late 70's and 80's with all the KF movies. Same with TKD and its mass marketing. But it's all about MMA now.

Professional martial artist don't make that much money anyway unless they're one of the few top fighters. Why should Chuck Liddel or other champions step down the ladder and enter in a low popularity tournament that pays much less and with different rules? Then he'd have to significantly rework his fighting strategies? Give Chuck Liddel a broadsword and put him a KF weapons tourney and he will get clobbered by a 15 year old girl who's good with that weapon. But why would Chuck waste his time and risk his rep for? There are tons of different tourneys with tons of different rules all over the world. He can't set out to conquer them all.

Just like how boxing champs who makes 10s of millions of dollars per big fight won't bother with MMA's $100k or so purse...unless they've past their prime and needed the money real bad b/c they blew all of their winnings.
