Thailand suggestions?

I have an old girlfriend who will be visiting Thailand, and thought I would throw some questions to the forum on her behalf. She's interested in going to watch some good MT matches, and I was wondering if anybody has any personal suggestions on the best stadium to visit, and what the best night might be -- if that is something that can even be generalized. I know there are 2 important stadiums, and that the show varies from evening to evening, but I can't remember more than that. Any suggestions?

Also, any tips for girls travelling alone? Things to watch out for, or things to definitely see?

There are two big stadiums in Bangkok and one or the other will have fights every night of the week. They are called Ratchadaemon and Lumpini (I'm not guaranteeing the spelling of either of those, but they are close enough). According to the guidebook I had at the time Lumpini tends to get the better fights (Was is Thursday nights that were supposed to be best?). But unless she is a really hardcore fan or an expert in MT I doubt it'll make much of a difference. either way she'll see some great fights. She should stay away from the small dinner show matches. I've never been to one but have heard they are fake. Thailand isn't particularly dangerous so if she uses some common sense she should be OK. I didn't spend much time in Thailand and didn't see much. But my advice for traveling in general is don't be afraid to get away from the tourist areas (and tourist restaurants). Get out to were the locals go and meet the people.

I just got back from Thailand myself. What E1am said is correct, Lumphini and Rachadamnoen are the top two stadiums. Stay away from the Weekend afternoon fights, these are warm up/sparring sessions for tourists. Ringside seats cost 500 Bhat, regular seats cost around 150 Bhat. Beware of booking through your hotel, you can get ripped off!

Bangkok is nuts - crazy traffic and pollution, but really interesting. I would say the coolest thing I did was cruise around the Chao Phraya river and adjoining canals.

If your friend has the chance she should head up to Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai is a great town, really laid-back compared to Bangkok.

Watch out for people selling fake gemstones and antiques.
