What is there to do in Houston Texas?

My father wants to transfer there next year. He offered to buy me a NEW car if I go to university or college there. I am pretty sure its because of the money. It's cheaper. My mother is pretty against me going to college there and us moving there. She has the idea that I'll turn into a hick from living there. (LOL) Anyway I'm not ready to pass judgement because I have never been ther or have any idea of what its like? How are the race relations down there? Good Muay Thai schools there, I mean good enough so they have competitors?? BJJ, Vale Tudo???

Whats the life like, the people? What's to do down there?? I hope cowboy hats arent a fashion statement there. Right now I am considering Boston, LA, Toronto, NY and of course Houston as places to go to university.

Houston is a GREAT town. No, we aren't rednecks. Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States. Race relations are pretty good. It is a VERY diverse city. I'm pretty sure I've seen you post that you're Asian. If you're thinking of going to University of Houston (I go there) probably 15% of students are Asian.

The club scene is pretty good if you know where to go. There's not much scenery if you're an outdoors guy, but Galveston and Lake Conroe aren't bad. Great food. Cowboy boots? No.

Give me an idea of what else you're looking for. Come down and visit.

Cool, my dad wants me to go to AMU or something. He is even getting a co-worker from Texas to try to swing me in going. LOL

I had no idea Houston was so big. Is the beach near by?? Seriously, I miss the beach. Haha

Training is important to me. I need a good M.T. school! But of course the most important thing is assurance that I'll fit in there. I've never been to Texas b4, although I hear the BBQ is the best. Which is a big plus. I know its hot there.....good I hate the f_uckin snow!! What is the crime rate like? Traffic? Easy to find your way around?

And what is Houston exactly known for? How close is it to other major cities like Dallas and El Paso?

Do you mean Texas A&M? If so, disregard the redneck and cowboy hat part in the previous post. College Station is where A&M is. It's about an hour and a half outside of Houston. It's not bad, but it's pretty hick and there is NOWHERE to train grappling or MT.

Galveston is an island an hour outside of Houston (the other way from A&M). The waves suck, but hell there's sand and water.

Tim is a great MT instructor. Trained with and is ceritfied by Master Chai.

The BBQ and Mexican food is to die for.

It's hotter than hell and 90% more humid.

Crime isn't that bad for a big city, if you're in the right part of town.

Traffic sucks ass. Houston is very spread out and people don't walk here because of the heat. Once you get the main freeways and streets down, getting around isn't bad.

Houston is know for NASA, oil and computers for business. Our pro sports teams are the Astros, Rockets and Texans next year. Racial breakdown is probably 35% white, 35% hispanic, 20% black and 10% asian. Anything you want to do can probably be done here.

Dallas/Fort Worth is four hours north. Austin is three hours west/north west. San Antonio is three hours west. El Paso is twelve or thirteen hours west (no joking, Texas is big).

LOL, I do love my BBQ, in fact it's one of my life goals. To try the best beef jerky, steak, ribs and chili in the world. Texas would be a good place to start. Haha

I also had a serious craving for Mexican food since I left LA for Toronto. Tex Mex looks really good too. ****, you guys should deport some of the mexicans and send them to Toronto.

All stereotypes aside, Houston is very metropolitan. Like you were told, it's the 4th largest city in the U.S. you are about 3 hours from Dallas/Fort Worth (which combined would be about the size of Houston). San Antonio (where I live) is about 3 hours as well, and is the 10th largest city in the U.S.

No, it isn't "hick" at all, but if you are talking about Texas A&M, it is EXTREMELY redneck.. and they take great pride in it. There are several good Universities in Houston. The best, by most accounts, is Rice. Good luck, though, it's tough to gain admission. U of H is OK as well. (If you want a big, state school, without the "redneck" appeal... you're only a couple of hours from Austin, home of the University of Texas...... HOOK 'EM HORNS!!!! |~|


Houston is well situated. 3 hours form DFW and SA, not far (1 1/2 hours?) from Galveston, not too far from Mexico if you'd like to visit. Very diverse, large asian community. REALLY hot and humid in the summer.. and the women? Judge for yourself, they are incredible. Lots of good MA in Houston as well. Make sure to check out Tim Mousel's place for MT, etc.

If you need more info, just ask. It's not too difficult to get a Texan to talk about their state!

check out austin. great school (attended grad school there), cool scene/people, pretty hill country.

have lived minneapolis, london , madison, tampa, l.a., san francisco, seattle, key west, austin, and now in hawaii. austin maybe my favorite.

do need to visit and check out - can get a sense of a place pretty quickly that cannot regardless of research.

Yep, you have to check out Austin. It's a great city. The nightlife is awesome w/ tons of clubs and bars (6th Street is de Place). There are Coffee Shops galore, and the overall atmosphere of Austin is upbeat, exciting and refreshing. It's an awesome weekend party town. Whole Foods, Central Marketplace and Book People are just a few of the must-go to places.
One of the few complete copies of the Guttenberg Bible has been on display in AUstin for 20+ yrs.

Also, there's nothing greater than an educated, fit, sexy, attractive mid-20's professional female and Austin is loaded with them..:-) The fitness industry is very prominent w/ lots of gyms, yoga schools, etc.

Austin even beats Honolulu (not by much though). I wholeheartedly second the Austin vote as a great place to visit for a few days.
