  • Got my silly ass manhandled, today...

Today I took a private lesson with Mr. Andrea Pruneddu; Phase one instructor under Paul Vunak's PFS association.

I have only one thing to say: in a streetfight he would have beaten me badly.

We sparred bareknuckle and I got a HARD boot kick in the knee; I managed to land a solid cross in return. The thing that surprised me the most is that the guy can grapple for sure, he sprawled against double leg and when I took him down, he went into guard. We trained in shorts, shirt and military boots, he ALWAYS went for my eyes, and in the clinch he bite me hard on my neck.

So this is Progressive fighting system?

    I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I signed immediately for the apprentice instructor course, at the cost of traveling for 400 km one time at week. Fortunately the guy is from sardinia like me, so I didn' have to fly.

Yeah, I know, I'm a creonte, but when you find someone that can beat you, learn from him!

I sparred also with aluminium knives, and this time I fared slightly better, however I have two deep cuts in my abdomen.

I have a hint for all BJJers and MMartists here:

try to spar with someone REALLY without rules (and in a parking lot, like we did), without going full out, but realistically; you will be in for HUGE surprises....

I'm not crazy, but surely he is. At a point, during sparring I tought he was Insane, he was grinning like a dog, with a psyco stare...go figure. However, I wento for his vital points too, but I think that the years spent training under NHB rules had derailed me from the pure essence of streetfighting; now using foul tactics it's not natural for me anymore. A friend of mine that train nhb fro a year, went with me to watch the session, and he sparred also with Mr pruneddu; he had a slash three mm under his eye courtesy of a thumb gouge and a BAD mark from a bite on his thoath, also he went KO from a uppercut in the liver...

This guy is super, and I'm not easily impressed: he told me that after the BJJ craze, vunak ordered his instructor to train grappling like crazy, and he went to L.A. to have some privates with Rickson Gracie. He regularly train with Paul Vunak too.

If you go to the PFS site www.fighting.net, you will find the name of the guy (andrea Pruneddu) under the Instructors list, he's a PHASE ONE, someone can explain me what would mean? I guess however he's an advanced one, cause there aren't many.

the reason i say, "psycho" is because you guys are "sparring" with possible physically maming results! i mean, damn... your friend could have easily lost an EYE! what could you say after that? "uh, well... i guess i just didn't use the right defensive technique. i'll have to do better next time. can i have my eye back please." yeah, well good luck with progressing further... with one less eye! duh.

i thought the Dog Brothers were a little wacky, but at least they give you the option to use head gear, hockey gloves, elbow and knee pads. and they go full contact with kicks, punches, rattan sticks, etc. but metal blades?!?!?!?! what would you do if that instructor guy emptied your bowels in that parking lot??? or fatally sliced one of your main arteries (inner thigh, etc)??? "hey, good one... now can you get me to the emergency room... i think i'm bleeding to death."

i feel it's one thing to test your techniques to see if they're effective in a street encounter, but you also want to leave the "testing" in one piece and further more, what are the chances that you'd meet someone in the street with any trained fighting skills?

how much skill does it take to bite someone... or to gouge their eye or grab their groin... not much. but to defend against those techniques is another story.

eh, i could go on and on... you continue to do what you want and more power to you... i guess someone's gotta do it... i guess.

Deciding to stay intact and train within boundries,

                        Karl

U got an intersting point, Karlinhos, more later.

For now, two words of explication: we did use ALUMINIUM knives, dulled, and without sharp points (well, more or less) and the sparring rules were: no slashes or cuts to the face (we didn'had any headgear available) but full contact everywhere else. Remember, I'm not exactly a novice, expecially on knife fighting, so we sparred pretty safely; I think we were protected by our EXPERIENCE. As for eye gouges, the guy used the thumbs in a gentle manner, albeit explosive, however, I admit that maybe with my friends he got a little too much further.

I really got worried when he did a pointed fouettè (Savate kick done similar to a low kick but with the tip of the boot to the outside of the knee) full force, he easily would have broken my kneecap if my knee would have been more straight.

                          But, the main point is:

Why do we train for? If your purpose in martial arts are sporting/and or competitive and recreative, I completely agree with U, Kharlinhos,

                          BUT

If you want to prepare for a fight, be it in a alley, parking lot or inside a cage, you must deal with the unexpected; and the best manner to do it is to spar with minimum rules with the vastest possible array of partners.

After all, the whole point is that I got SURPRISED by his tactics, much in the same way a striker would be surprised going on the ground with a grappler (Royce and early UFCs comes to mind).

                          SO

Considered the fact that I have a compulsive need for REAL fighting, I will take my risks in order to learn. Maybe not a scratch in the retina, but a broken limb? No sweat. My friend is a newcomer in MMA, but he has a Pitbull attitude, and his only shortcoming is his tenseness.

                          HOWEVER

I got surprised only one time, and I JUST CAN'T WAIT for the next sparring session....

Did he ever try to grab or maim your precious jewels? Or did he lay off that? Getting hit there sucks!
